Example 2: Comparing Numbers: Refer to your book on page 12.
Given: Grade 4 pupils brought 23 835 kg of old newspaper 26 787
23 835
Grade 5 pupils brought 26 787 kg of old newspaper
Question: Which grade level brought more recyclable papers? _______________________
Method 1: Using number line.
21 000 22 000 23 000 24 000 25 000 26 000 27 000
As shown on the number line, 26 787 is to the right of 23 835. Thus, 26 787 is greater than 23 835.
It is written in symbols as 26 787 > 23 835.
Method 2: Using Place Value:
Ten thousands Thousands Hundreds Tens Ones
G4 2 3 8 3 5
G5 2 6 7 8 7

Same Different
3 is less than 6, written in symbols as 3 < 6. Hence, 23 835 is < 26 787.
Your turn: Using the same methods.
Given: Grade 3 pupils donated 24 980 can goods for the COVID 19 victims

Grade 4 pupils donated 27 524 can goods for the COVID 19 victims

Question: Which grade level donated more can goods? _________________________

II. Lesson Development

Remember

 To round off a number, follow these rules:

1. Look at the digit to the right of the digit to be rounded off.
2. If the digit is 5 or greater, add 1 to the digit in the rounded off place.
3. If the digit is less than 5, retain the digit in the rounded off place.
4. Replace all the digits on its right with zeros.
 The following symbols are used to compare numbers:
> means “is greater than”
< means “is less than”
= means “is equal to”
 After comparing numbers in a set, they can be arranged in ascending or descending order.
 The number line and place value chart mat be used to compare and order numbers.

II. Lesson Development

Remember

 To read a number, start with the digits in the highest period. Read the digits as one number
followed by the name of the period.
 The value of a digit depends on its place in the number. The value of a digit in one period is
different from the value of the same digit in another period.
 To compare two numbers with the same number of digits, start from the left. The number
whose left-most digit has the higher value is the greater number.
 To arrange numbers in increasing or ascending order, start from the number with the least
value to the number with the greatest value.
 To arrange numbers in decreasing or descending order, start from the number with the
greatest value to the number with the least value.

Lesson 2: Divisibility Rules for 2, 4, 5, 8, and 10 Section:___________Quarter: First
Objectives:
 Identify the rules of divisibility
 Use divisibility rules for 2, 5, 8, and 10 to find the common factors of numbers.
 Value the importance of unity
I. Preliminaries
Activity 1: Refer to your book on page 11

A sales attendant can arrange the 40 mobile phones into groups of equal numbers in a display
cabinet. What will be the arrangement? Write the missing number to complete it.

_____ groups of 20 mobile phones per group;

_____ groups of 10 mobile phones per group;

_____ groups of 8 mobile phones per group;

_____ groups of 5 mobile phones per group; and so on.

Therefore, the above groupings show that 40 is divisible by 2, 4, 5, 8, 10, and 20.

When a first number is divided by a second number and the remainder is zero, then the first number
is divisible by the second number. The second number is a factor of the first number.

Example: Your turn: Find out if 298 is divisible by 2.

158
4√632 2√298
-4
23
-20
32
-32
0

Since the remainder is 0,

632 is divisible by 4.

II. Lesson Development

Remember ( pages 12-13)

 Divisibility of a number by 2, 4, 5, 8, and 10 can be determined without going through the

process of long division like the example above by following the divisibility rules found below.

The following are some divisibility rules:

1. Divisibility by 2

 If the last digit of a number is even, that is, the number ends with 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8, then the
number is divisible by 2. If it is even numbers.
 Here are some examples: 28, 46, 912, 354, and 2 960.
 The last digits are even so the numbers are divisible by 2.

2. Divisibility by 4
 A number is divisible by 4 if the number formed by its last two digits is divisible by 4, or if the
last two digits are zeros.
Example: Determine if the numbers 216, 1 824, 95 632, and 7 900 are divisible by 4.
A. 216 is divisible by 4 since the number formed by its last two digits which is 16, is divisible by 4.
B. 1 824 is divisible by 4 since 24 is divisible by 4.
C. 95 632 is divisible by 4 because the last two digits which is 32, is divisible by 4.
D. 7 900 is divisible by 4 since the last two digits are zeros.

3. Divisibility by 5
 If a number ends with 0 or 5, then the number is divisible by 5.
Example: Are the numbers 600, 805, and 2 630 divisible by 5? The answer is YES. Why?
The numbers 600, 805, and 2 630 are divisible by 5 because their last digits are either 0 or 5.

4. Divisibility by 8
 A number is divisible by 8 if the number formed by its last three digits is divisible by 8 or if
the last three digits are zeros.
Example: Are 7 136 and 29 000 divisible by 8? The answer is YES. Why?

A. The last three digits of the number 7 136 is 136. Since 136 is divisible by 8, then 7136 is also
divisible by 8.
B. For the number 29 000, the last three digits are zeros. So, 29 000 is divisible by 8.

5. Divisibility by 10

 If the ones digit of a number is zero, then it is divisible by 10. All numbers that end with 0
are multiples of 10, so they are all divisible by 10.
Example: 10, 20, 500, 1010, 70, 45 890, etc.

Activity 2: Without actual division, tell whether the first number is divisible by the second.
Write YES or NO in the space provided. Page14.
1. 9 106; 4 ____________ 2. 1 595; 2 ____________

3. 37 940; 10 ____________ 4. 861 395; 5 ____________

5. 3 256 000; 8 ____________ 6. 109 901; 10 ____________

Activity 3: Write a digit on the line to form the greatest possible number divisible by the given
number/s.

7. 19 ____ is divisible by 2. 8. 5_____145 is divisible by 5.

9. 6 4_____2 is divisible by 8. 10. 98____3____0 is divisible by 4 and 5.

III. Integration

A. Read and explain the Bible Verse taken from 1 Corinthians 1:10 “I appeal to you, brothers, by
the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among
you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment.”
________________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________

B. Explain this saying “United we stand, divided we fall”.

________________________________________________________________________________

IV. Evaluation

Name: ______________________________ Score:_______/30

A. Complete the chart below. Put a check ( ) on the appropriate space if the given number is
divisible by the number in the top row and cross ( ) if it is not. (25 points all)

Number 2 4 5 8 10
Example:
532

944

5 830

72 900

245 648

8 360 475

B. Answer the following questions.

1. What is the least number that is divisible by 2, 4, 5, 8, and 10? _________

2. What is the least multiple of 5 that is divisible by 8? ___________

3. What are the least and the greatest three-digit numbers that are divisible by 2, 4, and 8?________

4-5. Write all the two-digit numbers that are divisible by 4, 5, and 8. ______________
