TOURISM

SITUATIONAL ANALYSIS
The municipality of Gitagum is endowed with tourist attraction both natural and man-
made. The main tourist potentials of Gitagum are its pristine beaches developed by beach
resort operators in the municipality. Local, domestic and international tourist are known to
frequent the beaches. The town’s tourism facilities have increased substantially over the past
ten (10) years. There are seven (7) tourism establishments in the municipality and one (1)
natural attraction. However, as of the first quarter of 2020, only Lagoon Beach Resort have
registered and accredited with the Department of Tourism. Various tourism facilities and
attractions can be found in these resorts to cater to the needs of tourism such as restaurants,
cottages, inns, function room, sports facilities and equipment. Other destinations are the Mt.
Anggas Mountain Range and Abaga Falls, in Barangay G Pelaez. In addition, the
municipality host a number of annual activities and festivals like the Sinulog Festival, annual
motor-cross event and annual basketball tournament.
Natural tourism attractions and potential tourist sites with activities and events have
been identified among the barangays in the municipality. Gitagum is one of the few
municipalities in Misamis Oriental with intact marine eco-system composed of mangrove,
seagrass and coral habitat. Misamis Oriental CLENRO rates the corals in Gitagum as good to
excellent. Aqua sports and activity such as scuba diving, snorkeling and angling have a big
potential that can be developed. Potential cultural attraction such as the Velasco Ancestral
Home and culinary culture are being explored to be tapped as part of Gitagum’s tourist
attraction.
In line with the thrust on eco-tourism, Gitagum is interested in developing natural
beauties, albeit tourism infrastructure, facilities, like roads, cottages and water system needs
to be upgraded.

From 2017-2019, domestic travelers of unspecified places of origin accounts account

for 2,121 visitors during the last 3 years. Fifty Seven (57) foreign travelers visited Gitagum
from 2017-2019. Unfortunately, data source could not ascertain the full extent of local and

foreign travelers, considering it was only recently that data are collected relative to arrival of
local and foreign tourist.

The budding tourism industry sees several potential tourist attraction, most of which
offers the natural bounty as the next big thing in drawing tourist into the Gitagum. The
municipality can offer falls in G Pelaez, mangrove reforestation Project in Barangay
Pangayawan, as well as the bounty of rich and diverse marine eco-system in our municipal
waters. Water related activities and sports such as kayaking, SCUBA diving, snorkeling and
sports angling can be developed to attract visitors. This aquatic activities can augment the
income of artisanal fisherfolks as service providers for boat rentals, cooks, and guides.

Culture and history can be tapped such as the potential of the Velasco Ancestral
House and as well as activities celebrating Gitagum’s culinary culture such as the abundance
of seneguilas and “humba baka”. Culinary tourism is a good strategy to promote the product
as well as the destination. Gitagum cuisine can be a culinary attraction.

Agri-Tourism Farm can also provide additional potential to draw domestic and
international tourist given the municipality’s rich natural resources, biodiversity, farming
heritage and natural hospitality. Farm tourism can also benefit the agriculture sector
particularly the farmers and their community. However, data source on potential natural
attraction could not ascertain the land area magnitude of these sites thus the vacant column on

DISASTER RISK ASSESSMENT

All tourism facilities have low risk for flooding, volcanic eruption and tsunami.
However, they have medium risk for typhoon and earthquake. Parts of Mt. Anggas have
medium risk for landslide. Most facilities are located in elevated position, except for Burnay
Sands attributing to its medium risk for storm surge. In 2019, massive grassfire ravaged large
areas of grassland in Mt. Anggas. Raise of temperature could lead to grassfires in Mt.
Anggas.
