CASE STUDY

CASE 3 MOTORBUS COMPANY: Que Sera

PARAGRAPH 3
A total of ten buses began plying the Manila-Isabela route. A maintenance unit was put
up at the Manila terminal in Sampaloc. Another was put serves the Ilagan, Isabela
terminal. Each unit has a full-time mechanic and one assistant.
One full time mechanic and one assistant per maintenance unit cannot sustain the
needs of the whole unit especially the company has 10 buses. How will the mechanic
and his/her assistant will handle all the buses that arrives in the terminal if they are lack
of workers to accomplish the assigned job for them? If the company sees that hiring
more workers for the maintenance unit will cost more expenses, well they might end up
bankrupt because the less workers a company have the lesser and slower the workload
to finish in assigned time.
It is best to hire enough work force in the maintenance unit to meet the necessary
requirements in the terminal. Hiring enough workers will benefit the company in terms of
efficiency of every bus, fast deliverance of work, convenience to other workers and the
safety of every passenger is not in danger. It is more expensive if the company stays in
one mechanic and one assistant per maintenance unit because both of them will not be
able to deliver their work properly that will cause so much delay on the expected
travelling hours of the buses. Work force is very important for every company;
insufficient number of workers will cause more problems in the future.
PARAGRAPH 4
Again, the problem is lack of enough workers. The mechanic diagnoses the automotive
system of the bus and later he produces a list of parts needing replacement. Because of
lack of workforce, purchasing parts is quite hassle for the maintenance manager
especially if he is in the other branch or other terminal.
In every maintenance unit, there has to be at least one person to buy the needed parts
in the bus because it will help for faster replacement of parts of the bus. What will
happen if the mechanic in the maintenance unit in the Isabela sends a list of parts
needed in the bus as soon as possible but the maintenance manager is at the Manila
maintenance unit for inspection? It is best to deploy one person in every maintenance
unit to buy the necessary parts but make sure that the person will be deployed or
assigned to buy the needed parts is automotive literate to avoid purchasing wrong parts.
Not having a worker who will purchase the needed parts will cause so much hassle to
the maintenance manager.
PARAGRAPH 5
Workers beating themselves just to make sure that they do their work properly, which is
not good because what if one of the mechanics or assistants suffered from a serious
health condition due to working too much. This will cost more expenses to the company.
It is best to hire enough workers to provide the services needed in every maintenance
unit especially the company has 40 buses now that requires more workers.
PARAGRAPH 6
Old methods of purchasing the needed parts was not improved.
Assign a person/s in every maintenance unit to purchase the needed parts in order to
replace the parts of the bus immediately to avoid delays of travelling hours of the buses
but make sure that the person assigned to purchase the needed parts is knowledgeable
in automotive parts particularly buses.
PARAGRAPH 7
Lists of needed parts are pile up and caused so much delay to bus drivers. Because of
the delay, travelling hours of the buses has been lessen which leads to poor or less
income for the company.
The maintenance manager should consider the present problem of his job before he
requests an application of retirement.
Before the problem arises, the maintenance manager should have been predicted this
situation, he must assigned or ask his bosses if they can assigned at least one person
in every maintenance unit to purchase the needed parts in case he is not around in both
maintenance units.
PARAGRAPH 8
After the approval of retirement of the former maintenance manager, the assistant
manager has been promoted as the new maintenance manager. The new maintenance
manager has no idea on the problems that he will encounter due to the sudden
retirement of the former maintenance manager.
The VP should bring up the situation and discuss where the former maintenance has
left a pile of work to do to come up to a fast solution to the problem.
PARAGRAPH 9
The new maintenance manager found out that there are unevenly supply of the
important parts and excessive quantities of some in the storage room. There are also
big volume of obsolete parts.
He must do a sorted list of parts that will help in case there are mechanics will need
some parts for the bus. Maybe he can ask for a new/updated part of the bus in
exchange of the obsolete parts to lessen the expense. For the excessive quantities of
some parts, he should instruct the worker in charge on not to buy more parts. He should
also informed the worker in charge in buying the parts about the lists he did after
inspecting the storage room for the worker to be aware on the quantities of different
parts.
He should monitor the parts that are frequently used and the infrequently used parts. He
should instruct the person who is in charge of purchasing necessary quantities of the
bus clearly.
PARAGRAPH 10
Engineer Ancheta was informed that there would be additional 50 buses within 30 days,
which means that 100 buses will be servicing the various routes assigned by Motorbus
Company.
He must organize a working plan for the maintenance unit and he should discuss this
matter to all workers in the maintenance unit to inform them about the additional volume
of buses.
