ARTIFICIAL AGGREGATE

• It’s a classification of aggregate based on density – Normal and light weight

• Eg. Broken Brick, Air – cooled slag, Sintered fly ash, Bloated clay
• Slag is a co-product of the iron and steelmaking process.
• After conditioning, screening, crushing and washing, the processed material
is an artificial aggregate
• Posses many advantages over natural aggregates.

ARTIFICIAL AGGREGATE
• It is the first choice for a number of construction applications because of its
improved physical and mechanical properties
• Whole life costs are minimized owing to its durability.
• Processed slag can be recycled back into steelmaking as a metallurgical
additive, using a patented method
• In addition, certain slag types have chemical properties that make them
effective filtering media or fertilizing agents
• Advantages in using an artificial material such as slag to mitigate the
environmental impact of steelmaking

ARTIFICIAL AGGREGATE

• Its advantages are firmness, low volumetric weight and fast

absorbability allowing the product to be used in concrete and mortar to be
immediately applied without changing their consistence.

Production of Artificial Aggregation

Figure shows the flow sheet of an artificial lightweight aggregate

manufacturing plant. This plant is comprised of silos, feeders, conveyors, a

mixer, a pan-type pelletizer, a sinter strand, a dust collector and fans.
Production of Artificial Aggregation
• The fly ash extracted from the silo in a given volume is fed to the mixer.
• If the unburnt coal content in the fly ash is low, a small amount of pulverized
coal is added.
• The fly ash mixed with a proper volume of water by the mixer is fed to the
pan-type pelletizer and pelletized into 5-15 mm green pellets.

• The green pellets are fed to the sinter strand and indurated.
• The characteristics of the pellets are controlled by promoting sintering
reaction at the subsequent sintering zone.
• After sintering, the pellets are slowly cooled by air, and then are screened 5

into 5-10 mm and 10-15 mm piece sizes for use as commercial pellets.
