CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Abstract

Social media have had a major influence on the student performance in recent years. Social

media creates many opportunities and threats for students in various fields. Addiction to

social media and it was impact on student academic performance caused the researcher to

design and conduct this study. The purpose of this study was to investigate between social

media addiction and academic performance of the selected students in New Sinai School and

Colleges Sta. Rosa Inc.

Introduction

Social Media allows people to interconnect in many ways we could never imagine, how we

did till now without it. The primary reason we use social media is to stay connected. Wankel

(2011) claimed that the use of social media encourages students to go beyond the normal

use of this technology in classes and explore the use of social media and how it can be

utilized for collaborative learning, which produced the course material in the first place.

It plays an enormous part on the internet as entire. Web isn't fair for implies of looking

for data. It has experienced rapid development, with noteworthy impact on social life and on

modes of communication. People have discovered that the Web can be utilized to

associate with other individuals for commerce or commercial reason, to

form modern companions, or to stir ancient companions and long misplaced relatives.


Social media ought to be utilized for relaxation time and for critical times as it were. It had

consumed the time of students because instead of spending time for studying some were

spending it on using social media. That is why it is no surprise it have influenced the way

people live and socialize especially the millennial and students. The use of Social Media sites

has evolved with the growth on its applications. From the roots of its use - to be used as a

socializing platform and sharing, it has evolved from an activity to a phenomenon.

The main issue of this study is the level of addiction using of social media and because of that

some just spend time on internet instead of studying. How Social Media does affect the

performance of students at school?

This research looks at social media network participation and academic performance in

senior high schools. The study was aimed at identifying social media network sites and their

usage among students, how students networked and participated on social media networks,

time invested by students on social networks, the effects of social media on students’

grammar and spelling as well as the effects of social network participation on the student’s

academic performance within the context of the social learning.

Theoretical Framework

A theoretical framework according to Ennis (1999) is a structure that identifies

and describes the major elements, variables, or construct that organize your

scholarship. It grows out of the research focus, guides the design of individual

studies, and structures your research presentations and publications. This study

adopted Bandura’s Social Learning Theory (SLT) and Katz’s Use and Gratification

Theory. The two theories answered two aspects of the study, that is, academic

performance (learning outcomes) and competition which is social media and

academic work.

We employ the social learning theory of Bandura to construct a model linking

social media usage and academic performance. Social Learning Theory describes

the acquisition of skills that are developed primarily within a group. According to SLT,

three elements, including individual learners, peers, and situations, potentially affect

individuals’ learning outcomes (Bandura, 1997). Ainin et al (2015), states that Social

Learning Theory ‘’ basically explains how the environmental and cognitive

components collaborate to affect an individual learning and behavior pattern ‘’. Social

learning theory views learning as a social process that individuals will self-initiate,

regular learning, and actively construct knowledge by acquiring, generating, and

structuring information (Yu et al., 2020)

Conceptual Framework

Figure 1 shows the entire flow of research. This conceptual framework includes the

independent variable and the dependent variable to be used in the study. The

independent variable includes the application and hours spent of the levelness of

social media addiction. The dependent variable as shown in the figure involves the

perception of the selected senior high school students about their academic

performance. And as for the implications in the study, this involves the data analysis,

correlation analysis, statistical treatment and analysis, observation, and survey. This

implication helped the study to determine the significant relationship between the level

of social media addiction and to the respondents’ perception about their academic

performance.

Statement of the Problem

The study aims to edify the view of the students academically, to highlight the level of social

media addiction and its impact of their academic performance by conducting an online

survey.

Scientifically, the study would answer to the following questions:

1. What are the social media platforms frequently used by the students?

2. How frequent does the youth use social media?

3. How can social media addiction affect their academic performance?

4. Is there a significant relationship between the level of social media addiction and to the

respondents’ perception about their academic performance?

Null Hypothesis

Ho. There is no significant between the levelness of social media addiction and

to the respondent.

Significance of the Study

The results of the study will be of great value to the following groups of people.

To the future researchers. This study will be beneficial to the future researcher

because it will serve as a baseline data, using the necessary statistical tools to

replicate this work in order to identify other results or discoveries about the

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

The study mainly focuses on analyzing the level of social media addiction it was impact on

the academic performance of selected Senior High School Students. The study will use

Descriptive Correlational to identify the impacts of social media addiction to the academic

performance of senior high school students. The data collection will be conducted through the

use of an online questionnaire prepared by the researcher. This study yearns to identify the

significant relationships of the level of social media addiction and academic performance to

the selected senior high school students. It delimits that the study may not be generalized to

other students who are no longer part of Senior High School.
