Engineering Department SHEET : 1 of 3
RELEASE : September, 1976
M ATE R I AL S P E C I F I C ATI O N REVISION : November, 1996

NAME: STEEL SPECIFICATIONS FOR BAR, WIRE OR ROD STOCK, OR

SEAMLESS

1. GENERAL

These specifications cover a number of selected GMHA’s HN 1460 grades of

steel, suitable for the manufacturing of parts where a range of steel grades is
considered suitable and/or improved machinability is required.

The HN 1460 grades of steel specified in this specification are further grouped
under two steel classifications X1000 and X1100.

Where surface finish is not designated on Engineering drawings and where

Engineering drawings specify cold drawn steel (or C.D. steel), components must
be manufactured from bars which have been cold drawn by normal commercial
practice. Hot rolled or bar turned material is not acceptable.

2. APPLICATIONS

2.1 X1000

X1000 specifies steels which will satisfy the design requirements of a

number of non-critical parts made from bar, wire or rod stock.

The steel specifications listed below are acceptable for the manufacture of
any parts which specify HN 1462 - X1000 steel.

2. APPLICATIONS

2.2 X1100

X1100 is a general steel specification covering a number of specific steels

with added elements for improved machineability. Any one of the
following permitted steels will provide satisfactory engineering properties
in the finished part, provided any additional restrictive clause or clauses
required by the component drawing are also met.

2.2.1 Permitted HN 1460 Steels:

HN 1460 GRADE EQUIVALENT AS1442-1991

or AS1443-1994 GRADE
CS1100 X1112, 1214, 12L14
S1214 1214
S12L14 12L14
XS1112 X1112
XS11L12 -

2.2.2 Special Note:

For manufacturing reasons, it may be necessary to specify a

specific steel. This requirement should be covered by an
appropriate manufacturing document.

2.2.3 Leaded Steels:

Potential hazards are associated with the use of Leaded Steels

when welding is required e.g. weld nuts. Consequently free
machining grades of steel containing Lead are not to be used for
these applications. The analysis & other requirements of these
materials are shown in HN1460 specification.

3. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
