Holden Limited NUMBER : HN 1907

Engineering Department SHEET : 1 of 8
RELEASE : December, 1990
M ATE R I AL S P E C I F I C ATI O N REVISION : August, 1996

NAME: HOT DIP ZINC - IRON ALLOY COATED STEEL SHEET AND STRIP

1. GENERAL

This specification covers the requirements for double sided hot-dipped Zinc
coating converted to Zinc-Iron alloy for low carbon steel sheet and strip.

2. APPLICATION

This material is generally used for making vehicle exterior panels, interior panels
and reinforcements with the zinc iron alloy coating on the surface of both sides to
provide perforation corrosion resistance. Zinc-Iron alloy coatings are more readily
weldable than hot-dipped Zinc coatings (HN 1043).

3. REFERENCE SPECIFICATIONS

Type ZF coatings* as covered by Australian Standard, AS1397-1993 "Steel Sheet

and Strip - Hot-Dipped Zinc-Coated or Aluminium/Zinc-Coated". Additional
requirements shown in Section 3 are for materials used for parts painted in the
GMHA production paint system.

* NOTE: AS 1397-1993 also covers Type Z coatings (Zinc hot-dipped) and Type
AZ coatings (Aluminium Zinc Alloy). These coatings are not included in HN 1907.
Refer HN 1043 for Type Z coatings.

4. DRAWING MATERIAL NOTES

This material will be specified with or without qualification.

However, when a given part design requires a specific material property

such as minimum yield strength, the drawing material note must always
show the steel grade required as shown in Section 5.3.

5. SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS (continued)

5.2 Base Steel Grade

5.2.1 Not Specified

The parts manufacturer may select from AS 1397-1993 Section

2 or Section 5.3 of this specification a steel grade appropriate
for the economical production of the part.

However, once trial parts have been submitted for Engineering

test programs, change to a lower strength grade is not
permitted without Central Laboratory approval.

Note: The lowest possible yield strength for parts specified to

this material category is 115 Mpa.

5.2.2. Specified

Grades of steel must be specified on the part drawing by using

the designations shown in Section 5.3.

In special circumstances other steel grades may be specified

by reference to other appropriate specifications or supplier
designations. All other requirements of this specification apply.

6.1.1 General Applications -

Special surface texture requirements beyond AS 1397-1993

requirements are not applicable to HN 1907 materials.

6.1.2 Exterior Panel Applications -

To satisfy exterior top coat systems HN 1623, HN 1673 and HN

1643 requirements, the surface texture of materials used for the
highly visible exterior surfaces of the vehicle must not decrease
the Distinction of Image (DOI) or gloss of the applied paint.
