CORONAVIRUS OUTBREAK

State daily death toll again tops 100

7-day average rises to
115; total fatalities for
pandemic at 11,304
By Jamie Munks
The seven-day average for
deaths of people with
COVID-19 in Illinois has risen
to 115, more than double where
it stood two weeks ago, as the
entire state moves into another
phase of tightened restrictions
meant to stem the pandemic’s
strong fall resurgence.
State public health officials
reported 126 additional deaths
on Friday, a triple-digit death
toll for the third consecutive
day. The latest fatalities raise
the statewide death toll to
11,304.
“If we all stay home as much
as possible, if we all avoid the
trips outside the house that we
don’t need to take right now, we
can fight this recent surge and
turn things around for our
health care workers and hospi-
tal systems who are facing an
increasingly dangerous situa-
tion across the state,” Gov. J.B.
Pritzker said at his daily co-
ronavirus briefing in Chicago.
“And we can potentially pull
back on these mitigations for
everyone before the December
holidays.”

What Congress
doesn’t understand
Partisanship in the U.S. continues to
spiral out of control. Republicans and
Democrats in Congress are blindsided by
their own biases, resulting in their inability
to work together to protect Americans
from the devastating effects of COVID-19.
I’m a student at the University of St. Fran-
cis studying social psychology, and it has
occurred to me that members of Congress
would benefit from knowing about social
traps, simplistic thinking and superordi-
nate goals. Knowledge on these topics
would help partisanship to decrease, allow-
ing members to keep Americans’ best inter-
ests in mind when making decisions during
this growing pandemic.
Social traps occur when conflicting
groups pursue their own interests, which
causes both parties to demonstrate de-
structive behavior. With COVID-19 cases
on the rise and many countries entering
into their second round of lockdowns,
Congress must realize that this is not a
Democrat vs. Republican situation. This is
a situation where the American people are
trying to survive a pandemic. In some way,
shape or form, every American has been
affected by this spreading virus that does
not discriminate and has no political affilia-
tion.
Simplistic thinking occurs when ten-
sions are high. Rational thinking becomes
difficult and conflict can be the result of
avoiding ongoing problems. Congress WALT HANDELSMAN/NEW ORLEANS ADVOCATE
