Jack needs to understand the classification of software

Instructions: Read the text below.

Jack: Hi, Anna. Thank you for your help. I couldn't attend class yesterday. What did
you study?
Anna: We learned that software can be categorized into application software and
system software.
Jack: Oh no! I missed the explanation.
Anna: Yes, you did, but let me explain. Application software refers to the computer
system and special functions, but system software refers to the computer
hardware and other platforms to run application software. In other words, it is
used to support, control and run the computer.
Jack: Can you give me some examples of system software?
Anna: System software can include device drivers, operating systems, utilities, and
malware. For example: when you turn on your computer the operating system
allows hardware devices to talk to each other, it can control the way they work.
Every computer has an operating system like Mac, Windows, and Linux.
Jack: Ok, it is clear. And, can you give me some examples of application software?
Anna: Yes, I can. Remember, application software is different from system software.
That is to say, the application software is the productivity programs because
they can enable the user to complete a task. For example, imagine you have a
new computer and you only have Windows. Windows offers some basic utility
programs like the calculator. If you need to add some numbers up, you can do it
with this utility, but if you need to do a more specialized task then you need to
install some application software on the computer. This application software can
be the Word processor or spreadsheet to do projects or research.
Jack: I understand. The application software is a definition we use to describe
programs we usually buy or develop to perform a specific task.
Anna: Exactly!

Simple Connectors

Connectors are words that form different relationships between words and clauses.

Connectors give equal emphasis to the two clauses they connect. They are known as
conjunctions. The connectors help you to organize what you say in a more logical form.

The most common simple connector are but, and, nor, yet and or.

One of the most common connector to make contrast is but. It is a connector that joins
two independents ideas. They have a subject and a verb. They are commonly followed by
a comma.

Examples:
This application software is not for John, but Mark.
We're going to buy a computer, but we're also going to buy a printer.

Learning Points

Application Software and System Software

Computer software can be classified into types based on common function. These are
two general classifications: application software and system software.

Software performs special functions like basic operation of the computer and
entertainment functions. There are many different types of systems and applications
software because the range of tasks that can be performed with a computer are big.

Classification:

1. Application software refers to the computer system. They are the productivity
programs because they enable the user to complete a task. For example, you may use
the Word processor to write a letter.

2. System software refers to the computer hardware and other platforms. These
programs are dedicated to manage the computer. For example, the operating system
that your computer has like Window or Linux.

Examples

• System software can include device drivers, operating systems, utilities and
malware. For example: when you turn on your computer the operating system
allows hardware devices to talk to each other, it can control the way they work.
