Class - Literacy
Curriculum Update
Our classroom is currently working on reading for
meaning, and different strategies to increase their
ability to understand various texts. We have just
completed lessons on making connections, and
students have demonstrated improvements to
applying texts to their existing knowledge.
In the coming weeks, we will be working on writing
paragraphs as well as predictions! Students are
currently learning how to identify and differentiate
between topic and concluding sentences. Also, the
class will be primed to make predictions before
and during reading, and assessing those
predictions after reading. Working on the language
of predictions at home could be a great help for
their understanding! We have been using sentence
starters such as:
"I think ___ will happen because...", "I predict
that...", or "my prediction was right/wrong
because..."
Additionally, after working on each step of our
Daily 5 (word work, read to self, read to someone,
work on writing, meet with teacher), there has been
a significant jump in independence! Everyone is
aware of the steps to follow and the classroom
routine has been established.

Our Classroom!
Physical Distancing Classroom
Each student has their own independent
document holder. Tables and chairs are
positioned at least 1 metre apart and students
are required to wear masks in the classroom.
Computer Station
Chrome books are available in class for each
student to promote learning through active
engagement, sharing, and collaboration.
Learning Areas
An area located at the back of the
classroom is designated for students' to
list and revisit their learning goals in
addition to sharing their work from class.
Birthday Area
A special section of the classroom is dedicated to
celebrating everyone's birthdays. This
encourages students to build rapport, practice
essential social skills, and establish a sense of
community.
Classroom Environment / Structure
There is a balance of one-on-one teacher
interaction, whole class learning, small
group work, and independent time.
Students also have opportunities for peer
and self-evaluation. It is an essential
aspect of our classroom for all students
to have an equal voice.
