LESSON 14
1. Is the true-story film a proof of Lesson 14 (MEN AND MASCULINITY)? Why and why not?

For me, this is a proof of lesson 14 (men and masculinity) for the reason this lesson referring to the
men’s violence especially in pornography. Before Maya was raped, Maya caught Jericho doing
masturbating and Jericho told Maya to keep it secret and as a child, she did what he asked for. On the
next day the man in the story sexual assaulted the helpless Maya becomes a victim of rape to Jericho.
When Maya told to his Father named Ernie his reaction was very angry and he went to the room and
saw a magazine that has sexy women in the magazine as a proof that Jericho was addicted to it. In the
story it shows how the man sexually assaulted the young girl at the age of 7 and it was very pity to the
young girl without knowing what Jericho did, the young girl only knew that they were playing but it is
not for an adult and it was also a child abuse for doing raped a 7-year-old girl.

2. Explain what kind of family formation is being reflected in the story? Relate it to the cultural
practice of the Filipinos.

Families exist in all societies and they are part of what makes us human. The kind of family
formation is being reflected in the story was extended family because it surrounded in which people are
supported and cared for and social values are developed and each member within a family can be
affected by changes in family situations and changes in the formation of the family itself within sharing a
household. Family is considered to be the foundation of social life for most Filipinos, we totally support
and care to our family especially on women we protect them from dangerous and untrusted people. In
the story it shows the importance of the family especially what Maya experienced by her Uncle it totally
show that the family is always right there no matter what you have come through to your life, there is
always a family and never be fade away. Forever and always you have your family in bad time and in
good times there is a family who supported you and cares for you too.

3. If you are the home-owner of the family head, what would you do? Why?

If I am the homeowner of the family head, I would do by not accepting again the husband of my
sister especially I know that something happened to my sister before because of him and an
irresponsible husband and a father of the family. As a family head, I would take care of my family and
make sure that they are safe against to other people especially we know the history of that person.
Safety first to our family that comes to our mind, nobody in the family wants to hear or to know that
something happen one of the member of our family and we make sure that everybody are comfortable.
The life on each of our family is very important to us that are why we do the right thing as much as they
are safe, we do everything even if it is risky or dangerous as long as everything is okay, at peace
especially a happy family too. In addition, I would have done the same as Ernie and I will ask the child in
serene because it can be difficult to the child to admit especially on being raped by someone and I will
fight for what is right just to make sure to put the rapist into the jail even it is hard to accept the
situation.
