Patak Polio been push through amid of COVID-19 in barangay Bancod, Indang Cavite

Polio is a highly infectious disease that mainly affects young children. The disease is transmitted
from person-to-person primarily through the fecal-to-oral route resulting from poor sanitation and
hygiene practices, and less frequently through contaminated food or water.

Sabayang Patak Kontra Polio in barangay Bancod in August 17-18, 2020. This campaign is to
prevent the spread against poliovirus and to protect vulnerable children. The dosage will be given to all
children under five years age, (0-59 months), regardless of immunization status.

The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Children’s Fund and the World Health
Organization have sought urgent action to prevent major measles and polio epidemics as COVID-19
continues to disrupt immunization services worldwide.

“The second round of immunization activity will ensure full protection of children against the
poliovirus and is expected to improve the immunization coverage by providing all children under five
years old with free doses of oral polio vaccine,” DOH Region 4A Director Dr. Eduardo C. Janairo stated.

“Continuous implementation of polio response amid the present health crisis we are facing is
important as this will prevent not only the debilitating effects of the disease, but also interrupt the
transmission during a pandemic,” said Health Secretary Francisco T. Duque III.

According to Barangay health worker Florencia Flores, there are 229 children been given
dosages in round 1 and 229 children in round 2. The immunization implementation in the barangay was
carried out properly with the help of barangay tanod and kagawad.

One of the residents in Barangay Bancod agreed to the polio vaccination, Joanna Jean L. Santos
said “I agree, to prevent my child from getting sick”. She is well informed of the implementation of the
campaign.

“The Department of Health (DOH) – Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon) in its
October 12, 2020 report has achieved 83.23 % vaccination coverage or a total of 986,319 from a target
of 1,185,005 children aged 0-59 months old,” Regional Director Eduardo Janairo reported.

DOH targets 95 percent polio vaccine coverage.
