Question 5
a) Lebo decides that when she starts working she will save R 4 000 of her (4)
salary every month. The savings account offers 2,5% interest p.a.
compounded monthly. How much money will Lebo have in her account at
the end of 8 years?

b) The cost of a tour boat is million. It is expected that the value of this
boat will depreciate by p.a., on reducing balance, in years’ time.
The cost of a new boat is expected to increase at p.a. (in other
words, according to compound increase).

i Calculate the scrap (trade in) value of the boat after years. (3)
ii Calculate the purchase price of a new boat in years’ time. (3)
iii If the old boat is traded in, calculate the monthly payment (paid at the end (5)
of each month) which must be made into a Sinking Fund to replace it after
years, if the rate of interest is p.a., interest compounded monthly.

ii Draw a tree diagram to represent the situation if the teacher chooses three (4)
learners, one after the other. Indicate on your diagram all possible
outcomes.
iii Calculate the probability that all three learners chosen are girls (2)
iv Calculate the probability that at least one of the learners chosen is a boy. (2)

b) In a mathematics quiz, two teams work independently on a problem. They (3)
