Question 3 [14]
3.3 A mining company is drilling a well to reach water at a depth of 95m below the
surface. On the first day of drilling the drill reaches a depth of 20m. The rock
3
becomes progressively harder and the drill is able to reach only 4 of the
depth of the previous day’s drilling on each successive day.
3.3.1 Write down a sequence for the depth drilled each day, for the first four
days. (2)
3.3.2 Will the company succeed in reaching the required depth of 95m?

Question 6 [18]
Sabrina takes out a loan for R800 000, to buy an apartment. She pays back the loan
over 20 years (starting one month after receiving the loan). The interest rate is 11% p.a.
compounded monthly.
6.1 Calculate her expected monthly repayments to amortise the loan. (5)
6.2 If instead, Sabrina decides to repay R11 000 at the end of each month, how many
months will it take her to pay off the loan? (4)
6.3 After 96 repayments of R11 000 each, Sabrina decides to pay off the balance of
her loan. Calculate the lump sum she will need in order to settle the loan at this
time? (6)
6.4 What will the value of Sabrina’s apartment be after 20 years if it is expected to
increase in value at an inflation rate of 5,6% p.a. (3)
