Information of Radiation Oncology Department, Feb 2019

Regional Cancer Centre Rohtak is the only tertiary care centre in Haryana providing
comprehensive cancer treatment to needy and poor patients. The Department of Radiation Oncology came
into existence in the year 1977. On 7th Dec 1977 this institution got its first fully rotational Theratron 765
cobalt teletherapy unit. The existing building of Regional Cancer Centre has been inaugurated on 20th Dec
1988. In 1990s this institution got another cobalt teletherapy machine, facility for intracavitary
brachytherapy and other equipment required for a full-fledged Radiation Oncology Department. This
institute has been upgraded into Regional Cancer Centre (RCC) under National Cancer Control Program
by Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of India in 1999.
Eighty percent of cancer patients need Radiation Oncology sometime in the course of their disease.
PGIMS Rohtak is equipped with three teletherapy machines, one telecobalt Theratron 780E and two state
of art Equinox telecobalt machines. Regional Cancer Centre is also equipped with Microselectron
Brachytherapy unit, which was commissioned on 12th Feb 2005. The Institute is having a dedicated
faculty and six MD Radiation Oncology & five BSc Radiation Oncology Technology students are being
trained every year.
A Linear Accelerator complex has been approved by Atomic Energy Regulatory Board and
construction of same is going to start soon. Ninety five percent of the patients are receiving their Radiation
Oncology treatment free of cost and brachytherapy treatment is provided entirely free of cost to all the
needy patients. The RCC is actively involved in health education and community based cancer programs.

Functioning of Radiation Oncology Department

 1. Patient care, specifically treatment of cancer patients using radiation therapy and/or
chemotherapy along with palliative care.
2. Teaching and training of under-graduate medical students, postgraduate medical students and
paramedical technical staffs along with research work.
3. Other miscellaneous works like organizing early detection of cancer clinics, educating
common people about prevention of cancer, exchange of management technique results,
updating and departmental administration. As radiation is hazardous and very harmful for the
normal structures of the human body it should be very carefully, accurately and precisely
planned and delivered. Therefore, a proper and accurate Radiation Oncology planning and dose
calculation is essential for each patient before delivering the Radiation Oncology.

Various Sections of Radiation Oncology Department

1. Out Patient Department (OPD): Radiation Oncology department runs daily OPD. Here new
and old cancer patients on follow up are managed.
2. Teletherapy section: The department has three Cobalt-60 teletherapy machines. Here, a beam
of radiation emitted from the above mentioned machines treats patients.
3. Brachytherapy section: The department has state of the art HDR Brachytherapy facilities
commissioned in January 2005. Here patients are treated by placing radiation source directly
inside the tumor. At present all Oncologists consider Brachytherapy as a very important
modality of treatment for cancer. Therefore, Brachytherapy itself is a separate branch of
Radiation Oncology/Radiation Oncology Department.
4. Chemotherapy section: Here cancer patients are daily treated by chemotherapy/biologic
therapy on OPD and indoor basis.
5. Mould room and workshop: In this section patient immobilization devices, shielding devices
etc are made for each patient, which are used during treatment.
