Glomerular Filtration Process

Glomerular filtration is the first step in urine formation and constitutes the basic physiologic function of
the kidneys. It describes the process of blood filtration in the kidney, in which fluid, ions, glucose, and
waste products are removed from the glomerular capillaries.

Factors Affecting Glomerular Filtration

Rate
The glomerular capillary hydrostatic pressure is affected by the afferent and efferent arteriolar
resistance and the renal artery pressure. A decrease in the diameter of the efferent arteriole has the
opposite effect. An increase in renal arterial pressure (or renal blood flow) causes an increase in GFR.
