Vernacular Name : Guar

Guar, when literally translated from Hindi, means ‘cattle feed’ and until the recent
past it was essentially used for feeding cattle or for human consumption in times of
drought. The Guar plant is an extremely hardy crop that can be grown where precise
climatic conditions, soil quality and temperature exist and these essentially only
occur in the region surrounding the Thar Desert in India and Pakistan.

www.eiriindia.org 1
Almost 70% of Indian Guar is grown in Rajasthan with Haryana, Punjab, Gujarat
and Madhya Pradesh contributing the rest. A global shortage of the locust bean
gum5 (used in food, pet foods, paper making and textiles) led to search for a
substitute and the subsequent commercial extraction of Guargum and use in the oil
& gas industry in the 1950’s.

Guar requires dry weather and during harvesting, Guar needs continuous sunshine
in order for the bean to dry. Guar has high degree of resistance to drought because
it can absorb ground water efficiently and can therefore be grown in semi‐arid
regions such as the areas surrounding the Thar dessert. However, a lower rainfall in
any given season does reduce the yield of the crop.

During last decade Guar has immerged as an important industrial raw material and
Produced by man for thousands of years. India has been the single largest producer
and exporter of Guar gum accounting for more than 80 percent of the global output
and trade.

Guar has now assumed a larger role among the domesticated plants due to its
unique functional properties.

India Ranks First in the production of guar which is grown in the North Western
part of the Country which mainly includes the states of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana
and Punjab. Other main countries are Pakistan, U.S.A and Brazil.

Jodhpur City in the north western state of Rajasthan in India is the most ideal and
important processing centres of Guar Gum and contributes approximately40% of the
worlds' Guar Gum supply.

It is shown immediately after firstshowers in July and harvested around November

each year. The Guar Seed is processed to produce Guar Gum Refined Splits
(Endosperm), -Guar By-products Churi& Korma for Cattle Feed.

The byproduct of Guar Gum industry consisting of the outer seed coat and germ
material is called guar meal. The Guar meal after gum Extraction is a potential
source of protein and contains about 42% crude protein which is one and a half
times more than the level of protein in guar seed. The protein content in guar meal is
well comparable with that of oil cakes. It is used as a feed for livestock including
poultry. Guar meal contains two deleterious factors i.e. residual guar gum and
trypsin inhibitor, Toasting of Guar Gum improves its nutritive value in chicks.
Toasted guar Meal can be used in limited quantity i.e. Up to 10% in Poultry diet.
However it can replace groundnut cake by almost 100% in animal feeds.

Guar Gum (Galactomannan) is a high molecular weight carbohydrate polymer made
up of a large number of mannose and galactose unit linked together. The crude Guar
Gum is a grayish white powder 90% of which dissolves in water. It is nonionic
polysaccharide based on the milled endosperm of the guar bean whose average.

GUAR Seed Structure:-

The Guar seed consists of three parts: the germ, the endosperm, and the husk. It is
from the endosperm that Guar Gum is derived. A 100 kilo of beans, minus their
bean pods yields roughly 29 kilos of endosperm; 29 kilos of Guar powder.

Products distributed by the GUAR GUM:

35-40 Cps – 100 mesh

35-40Cps – 200 mesh

40-45Cps – 200 mesh

GUAR GUM: STRUCTURE DIAGRAM

Guar Gum Powder is extracted from the Guar Seed after a multistage industrial
process. The most important property of Guar Gum is its ability to hydrate rapidly in
cold water to attain uniform and very high viscosity at relatively low concentrations.
Its colloidal nature gives excellent thickening to the solution.

Guar Gum, either modified or unmodified is a very versatile and efficient natural
polymer covering a number of applications in various industries like food, beverages,
pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, paper, textile, construction, oil &gas well drilling,
mining etc, due to its cost effective emulsifying and thickening properties.

Neelkanth Polymers produces High Viscosity Guar Refined Splits, Guar Gum
Powder, Guar Gum Derivatives, Fast Hydrating Guar Gum, H.P. Guar and High
Protein Guar Meal.
