Completion Procedure Alert
Completion Phase BOP Test

Completion Procedure Alert:

During the completion phase, the method previously practiced for testing the tubing
head and BlowoutPreventerstack
reventerstack (BOP) has been altered. Previously the
Retrievable Bridge Plug (RBP) set in the casing below the wellhead was not
retrieved until the tubing head was tested and the BOP was nippled-
nippled-up and tested.
Now the procedure has been altered to retrieve the RBP after testing the tubing head
and prior to testing the BOP stack. This eliminates the mechanical barrier prior to
obtaining a BOP test which is a very risky procedure especially with a production
liner below.

Consequences:
The consequences of not having a properly tested BOP stack after removing the
mechanical barrier (RBP), could result in an influx to emerge below an untested BOP
and could be disastrous regardless of the type of influx.
influx. Once a leak occurs across
a BOP flange, it will erode the ring seal and the situation will escalate very rapidly.

Recommendation:

The basic recommendation is to always have a mechanical barrier below an

untested BOP stack. In this case, during the completion phase, the mechanical
barrier (RBP or other type) should not be removed until the BOP stack has been
successfully tested.

Comments:
The RBP will not be affected by a pressure build up from above when testing the
BOP stack. The process and procedure
procedure for testing the BOP stack with a tester cup
or a test plug will isolate pressure from reaching the RBP from above because by
testing the BOP with a tester cup ana open end drill pipe
ipe is run with the tester cup so
any leak during the testt below will be directly bleed to surface and the same for the
tester plug witch
h a lateral valve below the bowl of casing spooll will be open to
atmosphere so any leak will be seen from this valve,
valve finally the RBP will not be
affected during the BOP test.
N.B: the same mistake is done on the wells:

- MDZ 656
