VERB AND ITS CLASSIFICATION

THE VERB
A word that that tells something
about a person or thing.
FOR EXAMPLE

He laughs.
They were punished.
The window is broken.
I feel sorry.
The girls are singing.
The boy kicks the ball.
TYPES OF
VERBS
VERBS MAY BE DIVIDED INTO THE
FOLLOWING TYPES

1. Transitive Verb
2. Intransitive Verb
3. Helping Verb
4. Linking Verb
TRANSITIVE VERB

Transitive verbs have objects.

Transitive Passing over

For Example:
1. The boy kicks the ball.
2. I have learnt my lesson.
3. The driver stopped the train.
INTRANSITIVE VERB

Intransitive verb does not have object.


Intransitive Not passing over

For Example:
1. The boy laughs.
2. The bell rang loudly.
3. The train stopped suddenly.
HELPING VERB

Helping verb helps the main verbs in a sentence. They are:

Is, am, are, was, were, has, have, had,

For Example:
1. He is working.

2. The gate was opened.

3. He has been working.

4. He does not work.


LINKING VERB

Linking verb connects the subject with the object.


They do not show any action.
Simply connects the sentence.
For Example:
1. He is a doctor.

2. She looks upset.

3. I am afraid of dark.

4. Dreams come true when we believe in them.

SUBJECT COMPLEMENT

• Subject complement is adjective, noun, or pronoun that follows


a linking verb.
For Ex:

Sub linking V sub complement


The box is a present.
