The midterms score of MASTAT S32 students follow a normal distribution.

The mean is 70 but 34% of the class have scores between 70-80.

What is the probability that a student would have a score below 50?

=norm.dist(50, 70, 10, true)

If there are 30 students, how many have scores above 85?

= {1-norm.dist(85, 70, 10, true) } * 30

=2

1. NORMAL DISTRIBUTION

In an LED light manufacturing company, the total output power of a light module is
measured and compared to a target specification. In one product line of LED light
bulbs, the measured data from January to June 1015 shows a normal distribution
with a mean of 7.0Watts and standard deviation of 1.5Watts. The bulbs are sold
according to three variants according to the minimum light output power: 5W,
7W, and 8W.

(a) What percentage of production output will be considered as defective,

that is, it does not meet the minimum light output power in any category?

(b) What is the percentage that goes into the 8W category?

(c) How much of the distribution belongs to the 7W category?

2. POISSON

In SLEX Tollgate (Eton exit), there is only one attendant manning the
CASH LANE and supporting the E-PASS LANE. On an ordinary day, the
number of vehicles arriving at the CASH LANE follows a Poisson
distribution with a mean arrival rate of five (5) cars per minute.

(a) In an 8-hour shift, how many transactions are expected to

be processed in the CASH LANE?

The E-PASS machine experienced a problem and it took the attendant

1minute and 30seconds to go to the machine, address the issue and go
back to the CASH LANE. When the attendant is back…

(b) what is the probability that there is zero vehicle on queue

in the CASH LANE?
(c) what is the probability that the queue is more than 5
vehicles?

3. BINOMIAL

An investment management firm in Makati processes several hundred transactions per day. In one
department, the QA reported that their output has 10% error rate, that is, for every 100 transactions, 10
were found to have a problem. Last week, the department processed a total of 850 transactions.

(a) On average, the opportunity lost for every erroneous transaction is P50,000. What is the expected
amount of lost opportunity in the 850 transactions processed in the said department?

(b) The manager committed to have a maximum of 10 errors per week. What is the probability that this
will be met?

(c) What is the probability that the number of errors is more than 10% of the number of transactions?

4. DESCRIPTIVE STATS

Japan is one of the countries with aging population. A survey of 50 persons in Chiba shows following age
distribution (Table below).

4 49 40 30 68
1 22 41 19 64
5 35 42 47 72
8 34 42 18 80
7 23 20 20 76
10 29 41 38 74
1 33 28 53 70
62 27 30 15 79
32 34 38 76 75
48 61 25 65 72

Describe the sample according the following parameters:

(a) Central tendency – mean, median, mode

(b) Span – range, variance, standard deviation

(c) Distribution – Quartile 1, quartile 3, 90 th percentile

(d) Shape – kurtosis, skewness

(e) is there an outlier? If yes, which is it?
