Procedure
[Exp. 1] Preparation of a standard solution of sulfamic acid

1. Measure approximately 2 g of sulfamic acid using a electronic balance with

a weighing paper.
2. Weigh a dried 100 ml beaker using the electronic balance.
3. Pour the acid in the beaker and measure the total weight (the beaker + the
sulfamic acid). Then, calculate the net weight.
4. Add about 50 ml of pure water to dissolve the acid in the beaker. Use the
glass rod to increase the process.
5. Transfer it to a 100 ml volumetric flask.
6. Rinse the 100 ml beaker using about 10 ml of pure water, then transfer the
rinse to the flask. Repeat this process 3 times.
7. Fill the volumetric flask with water until the meniscus coincides with the
graduation mark.
8. Cap the flask and shack the solution thoroughly

[Exp. 2] Standardization of NaOH solution.

Part A: Preparation of the titration

1. Wash the burette with tap water and then with tap water.
2. Prewash the burette:
a) Pour about 10 ml of 0.2 M of NaOH solution making sure the tape is
closed.
b) Lay down and rotate the burette to let water droplets be absorbed
by the NaOH solution.
c) Open the tape and dispose the used NaOH solution is the waste
beaker.
3. Assemble titration apparatus then fill the burette with NaOH solution.
4. Place the waste disposal beaker under the burette and then allow the
NaOH to run out by opening the tap.
5. Close the tap then make sure there is no air bubble in the funnel of the
burette.

Part B: Preparation of the analyte

1. Prewash a 10 ml of volumetric pipette using the standard sulfamic acid

solution.
2. Measure 10 ml of standard acid solution by the volumetric pipette and
place it in the 100 ml beaker.
3. Add 40 ml of pure water measured by a graduated cylinder into the 100 ml
beaker.
4. Add 2 to 3 drops of methyl orange red solution to the acid solution.

Part C: Endpoint measurement

1. Assemble the apparatus on the right

2. Turn the volume switch of the stirrer clockwise slowly
to allow the stirrer tip to gently turn around.
3. Record the volume of the NaOH solution.
4. Drain 2 ml of NaOH at once. [(Vcalc – 2) ≈ 8 ml]
5. Gradually dispense some of the NaOH solution drop-
by-drop from the burette into the solution until the
color of the analyte changes.
6. Read the total volume of NaOH added.

[Exp. 3] Sulfamic acid – NaOH titration curve

Part A: Prepare the analyte

1. Add 10 ml of standard acid solution into a 100 ml beaker using a volumetric

pipette.
2. Add 40 ml into the 100 ml beaker using a graduated cylinder.

3. Assemble the apparatus below

Note: rinse the probe with water then wipe it with Kim wipe before soaking
its tip into the acid solution.

Part B: Draw a pH titration curve

1. Draw x and y axes on a graph paper. Ranges of axes are 0-to-20 for the
x- axis and 0-to-I 3 for the y-axis.
2. Read the pH value of the acid solution before the titration and plot the
data point on the graph.
3. Open the tap and drain a designated amount of NaOH into the acid
solution. See the instruction for the draining amount.
4. Read the pH value after the indicated value is stabilized and plot the
data point on the graph.
5. Repeat (3) and (4) until the total amount of added NaOH is around 20
mL.
