DNS Stability Module No. 9. Numericals based on Free Surface correction.

03 April 2020

1. A vessel displacing 18500 tonnes has KM 8.50m & KG 7.60m. If the following
tanks are slack, find the final GM (Fluid)

Tank Contents RD “i” (m4 )

1DB SW 1.025 500

3DB (Centre) HFO 0.95 1300

5DB (Port) DO 0.88 555

8 DB (Port) FW 1.000 28

2. A vessel of 10000 tonnes displacement, KM 9.5m, KG 7.8m has two rectangular,

identical deep tanks, Port and Starboard. Each tank is 12m long, 9 m wide and 9
m deep. (Keel to tank top). The Starboard deep tank is full of SW while the port
deep tank is empty. Calculate the GM(Fluid) of the ship, if one third of the
starboard tank is
a) Transferred to the port deep tank.
b) Pumped out.

(Hint no.1: When water is transferred or pumped out, the KG changes.Hence you have
to consider new KG)

(Hint no.2: a) both tanks will be slack & hence FSM of both to be considered;

b) Only one tank will be slack & hence FSM will be for only one tank)

The solution key is prepared for solving the numericals step by step. However, those
who wish to attempt these numericals on their own,may do so & later check their
method with that given in the key.

Any doubts, pls do not hesitate to ask me either on whatsapp or over phone.

Best wishes
