NTR 549- Pediatric Case Study

For NTR 549, we were required to perform a nutrition assessment on a child we knew. I chose
to interview a 9 year old boy who I was babysitting at the time. We had to develop a list of
interview questions to ask the child to complete a full nutrition assessment. This included
information such as:

a. Anthropometrics (age, gender, height, weight, weight history, percentile

classifications). Determine whether standing or recumbent height is appropriate
based on their age.
b. Food and Nutrition related history (Also want to assess diet history, factors affecting
intake, any GI distress, Food allergies/intolerances, etc, barriers to food consumption,
who prepares the food, etc.)
c. Biomedical Data – only if relevant and applicable. If no lab values are available or not
applicable, please put N/A in this section on the form.
d. PMH/Relevant Conditions
e. Family PMH/Social Hx
f. Pertinent medications/herbal supplements/CAM
g. Perform a visual physical assessment

Using the information I gathered, I had to complete the NCP form along with my proposed
estimated needs for the child and appropriate interventions if this was a hypothetical patient of
mine.
In addition, the following items were also included in the assignment:
1. Sample 1-Day Menu:

a. Indicate the recommend intake (RDAs) based on age and/or condition for the
following: fat, saturated fat, protein, carbohydrates, calories, calcium, vitamin D,
sodium, sugar, servings/amount of each food group and any other nutrient of
concern for the specific age range of the child.

b. Develop an age-appropriate 1- Day menu (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner & Snacks)

based on the recommendations stated above

2. Education Materials: Based on your assessment and proposed intervention, please

include at least 1 education material you would hypothetically give to this patient.
