Activity D:

Medication Administration

For each drug classification, list the potential effects of interaction with anesthetics.

1. Anticoagulants____can increase the rish of bleeding during the intraoperative and

postoperative periods; should be discontinued in anticipation of elective surgery. The
surgeon will determine how long the elective surgery the patient should stop taking an
anticoagulant, depending on the type of planned procedure and the medical condition of
the patient.____
2. Anticonvulsant Agents ___IV administration of medication may be needed to keep the
patient seizure free in the intraoperative and postoperative periods.___
3. Corticosteroids___cardiovascular collapse can occur if discontinued suddenly. Therefore,
a bolus of corticosteroid may be administered IV immediately before and after
surgery.___
4. Diuretics __During anesthesia, may cause excessive respiratory depression resulting from
an associated electrolyte imbalance.___
5. Insulin ___Interaction between anesthetics abd insulin must be considered when a patient
with diabetes is undergoing surgery. IV insulin may need to be given to keep the blood
glucose within the normal range.___
6. Phenothiazines ___May increase the hypotensive action of anesthetics.____
7. Tranquilizers ___May cause anxiety tension, and even seizures if withdrawn
suddenly.___
8. Monoamine oxidase inhibitors ( MAIOs) ___ Increases presynaptic neuronal cytoplasmic
concentrations of MAO substrates, especially norepinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine. It
is thought that the improvement in patients' symptomatology is related to the subsequent
increased release of these neurotransmitters into the synaptic cleft, again leading to a
downregulation of postsynaptic receptors__
