CREATING ELECTROMAGNET
As a young scientist, you are tasked to improvise an electromagnet using only the three
materials: iron nail, copper wire and a battery. You must show how these following three
objects can generate a magnetic field by attracting at least three magnetic objects. You will
take a video of yourself while doing the said activity and you must submit it on schoology
together with this narrative report (MS Word).
You can watch this video to give you some guides on how to make an electromagnet.
How to Make an Electromagnet - Science Experiment

Learning Objectives
MATERIALS:
nail, 3-inch (7.6 cm) or longer (made of zinc, iron or steel, but not aluminum)
Procedure:
Questions:
1. What are the functions of each of the following materials in the electromagnet:
Nail - By simply wrapping wire that has an electrical current running through it around a
nail, you can make an electromagnet. The more wire you wrap around the nail, the stronger
your electromagnet will be. Make certain that you leave enough of the wire unwound so
that you can attach the battery.
Copper wire - To concentrate the magnetic field, in an electromagnet the wire is wound into
a coil with many turns of wire lying side by side. The magnetic field of all the turns of wire
passes through the center of the coil, creating a strong magnetic field there.
Battery - A cell that carries a charge that can power an electric current. current: A flow of
electrons. The electric current from the battery caused the nail to have a magnetic field
around it. This magnetic field made the nail act as a magnet (an effect). It became an
electromagnet. When the battery was disconnected, the magnetic field went away, and the
nail no longer acted as a magnet.
2. Describe what happens if you hold a nail or paper clip near the coil.
When turned on, electromagnets act just like permanent magnets, but if you turn them off,
their magnetic properties disappear. I measured the magnet's strength by counting the
number of paper clips/nails the electromagnet can lift.
4. Can your electromagnet pick up paper clips when the current is disconnected?
The magnetic field disappeared when the current is turned off, thus it couldn’t pick up
paper clips.
Fill in the table below with how many paper clips your electromagnet was able to pick up.
Electromagnet How Many Paperclips Did It Pick Up?
With 10-12 coils(wire)
With fewer coils How many coils? _________
With more coils How many coils? _________
With a different battery #1 What size

With a different battery #2 What size
battery? _________
