ABM 201 Garcia, Precious Nicole A. Media Literacy

I. TOPIC
Media Literacy
II. ABSTRACTION (content)
Media encompasses all different channels or medium that are used to communicate information. It includes print media, films,
songs, poems, video games, social media, etc. It is a powerful enough to influence people, especially the youth, in how they
see the world, in various ways. At the advent of technology, these media have become more accessible. That is why it is
important to be media literate.
Media literacy is the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, create and act using all forms of communication. It is the ability to
identify different types of media and the message it conveys. Each media is created with a purpose. Some are purely
informative, while some are created with a persuasive intent. Others, are created to spread false information, and mislead
people. In order to be media literate, one must view media objectively. Its purpose, as well as credibility, must be taken into
consideration to be able to fully understand the message.
In this digital age, media literacy is an essential skill that one must have. It enables us to be smart consumers of products in
information, and not be easily swayed by what we see. It is important for us to be make our own decisions based on our
judgements.
III. REFLECTION (self-applied learning)
I learned that media literacy is a very important skill. I, myself, admit to being constantly on my phone, surfing through the net
every single day. I realized that everything that I can read and see through my screen has a deeper meaning as to why it was
created. I saw a lot of posts that have underlying propagandas, as well as those that are made to purposely spread fake news. I
admit to not being able to fully analyze and evaluate some of these posts, and be easily swayed by my own emotions as I read
them. But, learning the importance of viewing media objectively and critically will help me stop this behavior.
IV. INSIGHTS (new knowledge acquired about the topic)
To my understanding, media is everywhere around us, and it really is a powerful tool. Being media literate, is not simply being
able to utilize media effectively, but it is also being able to decipher its content. Media should not be consumed as it is
presented. Rather, the different viewpoints and messages must be completely understood in order to create another media, or
take action.
