I. TOPIC
Media Literacy

II. ABSTRACTION

According to the Oxford dictionary, media is the plural of medium. It refers to the ways where we receive
information and entertainment such as books, newspapers, email newsletter, films and others. It also refers to mass
media that can easily influence many people. The platforms of mass media are distributed newspapers, radio stations,
movie studios, television and the Internet. Literacy is the ability to read, comprehend and write using various materials.
This brings us to the definition of media literacy which is the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, and create media in a
variety of forms (NAMLE USA).

People should keep in mind that acquiring media literacy skills is very important. To practice this, everyone
should ask themselves questions such as, “who created the message and what kind of content it has?”, “how do other
people see it?”, “why is it being sent?” and lastly, “what should I do with the information I received?”.

While maybe most of us understand how media affects us and the society, we should ask ourselves these
questions so that we can create a more positive and well-informed environment we deserve.
III. REFLECTION

As I was given this topic, I expected that I am going to be confused with media literacy and information
literacy. However, while I am searching for information that I could use for my presentation, I am able to understand
what media literacy is and how important it is for us to learn about it. It is very important for students like me to
understand media literacy and be media literate.

IV. INSIGHTS

Media literacy will help us be responsible consumers and producers of media. Especially now that different
media are being used by people. It won’t matter if you belong to the older generation or the younger generation, what’s
important is that we help ourselves be media literate.
