1 Indian Scenario
 Kaolin production in India increased from 87,000 MTA to 2.5 MMTPA in 2011 partly supported
by higher exports to UAE. Exports in 2012 of crude Kaolin from India was around 140,000 MTPA
with shipments to UAE constituting 120,000 MTPA

 However, Indian production of processed Kaolin has declined markedly in the last decade by 70%
from what was in 2005-06

 Over 90% kaolin after washing (low value) is used in Cement, refractories and pesticides in India

 In India there is lack of production of paper grade

Kaolin and hence imported

 In India, consumption of Kaolin is in cement, ceramics, paints, insecticides, refractories, paper,

rubber, cosmetics, glass and others

 Imports to India in 2012 of high grade Kaolin for fillers was around 90,000 MTPA
2 Global Trade
 Top 10 exporters of processed Kaolin in 2012 include Finland, Belgium, Japan, Taiwan, USA,
Canada, China, Italy, Germany, Sweden (India ranks 23 rd in exports at 88,000 MTPA down from
17th in 2011 at 145,000 MTPA)

 USA is the dominant exporter of processed Kaolin to Europe and Asia

 Indonesia exports unprocessed clay to UAE since 2007

 Import of Kaolin by ten leading countries was about 5.0 MMTPA (Brazil, USA, UK, China, Czech
Rep., Belgium, Germany, Portugal, Ukraine and France). Import into Europe happens from USA
and Brazil besides shipment within Europe

 Kaolin imports to Japan and China are mainly for paper industry

 In Asia there is rise in demand for Kaolin in paper and ceramics industry

 Middle east (Turkey and Iran) has seen increase in Kaolin output due to high consumption in
local ceramics industry

 Consumption of Kaolin in Africa is second lowest after Oceania. Data availability of consumption
except in South Africa is not good. In South Africa Kaolin output has declined due to competition
from other materials

3 Global Consumption Pattern
 World consumption of Kaolin in 2012 as filler and extender was mainly in Paper (1.44 MMTPA),
Paints (0.925 MMTPA) and Rubber(0.75 MMTPA); Kaolin consumption in Ceramics, refractories
and Fibreglass accounted for 6.6, 1.3 and 1.2 MMTPA respectively

 Processed Kaolin used as filler in paper and other

applications has declined since 2007 by around 40%
to 75,000 MTPA

 On consumption pattern, Ceramics market dominates in Asia whereas fillers and extenders
dominate the market in Europe and North America

 Top ten application of Kaolin in the USA in 2012 are in paper coating, refractories, Fibreglass/
mineral wool, paint, catalyst, rubber, paper filling, floor and wall tile, cement and adhesives

 In China, Kaolin consumption by end use is in Tableware, paper, tiles, paint, sanitary ware,
fibreglass, plastics, rubber and refractories
4 Global Demand Forecast – Product Mix
 Growth forecast additional demand for Kaolin by 2017 will be driven mainly by ceramics. Sectors
that are expected to show above average growth rates are paints, plastics and fibreglass

 Globally the increase in demand will be in Asia with China leading the pack. Fillers and extender
end-uses will remain the largest markets for Kaolin. Paper industry will continue to be most
important single segment
 Kaolin in whiteware varies from
 Chinese demand for paper grade Kaolin is expected to
5% in dental porcelain to 40% in
grow to 600,000 MT/Annum by 2017. The
hard porcelain by weight. In the
requirement will be met through production in china
case of whiteware use of organic
and through imports from the USA and Brazil
binders such as poly vinyl
alcohol has led to use of low-
cost clays that was earlier
 Kaolin and precipitated silica are most commonly unacceptable due to lower
used fillers in printing inks. Ten largest players using plasticity
for Kaolin in printing ink are concentrated in Japan,
Germany and the USA 

 In India, demand for Kaolin in paint is expected to grow at rate higher than global average of
3.7% per year

 Future demand for Kaolin in Rubber will be driven by non-black and house hold products and will
be mainly in Asia

 Demand for Kaolin in Plastics will be driven by PVC segment in the cable market. In case of other
plastics demand for Kaolin is not expected to rise due to competition from Calcium Carbonate
and Talc

 Kaolin in adhesives and sealants are not performance enhancing type and hence of lower value
5 Global Players
- Ashapura and AMCOL of USA have 10,000 MTPA clay processing facility in Belgium to cater
to European market. The plant imports semi-processed clay from India for processing
