Millennium Challenge
Georgian schoolgirls will visit NASA Space center in summer and take part in an educational
program. Three students 17 years old Tamo Mikeladze, Nini Khundzakishvili and 15 years
old Ani Tetrashvili claimed the first place in the Millennium Innovations Award competition
that aims to reveal young inventors in the STEM fields.
Moreover, as a part of the program of Space Center University, the young inventors will visit
museums, galleries and private places of Space Center Houston, where the tourists
and visitors are not allowed to enter.
The winner team from gymnasium AIA GESS has presented project “Robot Labourant” that
is aimed at helping students to conduct experiments in natural sciences from home. The
invention enables students to get education from distance and has the ability to comply and
perform specific tasks that the students order the robot from home. The robot can speak and
answers the questions about the ongoing experiment.
Everything started with the idea of creating “Robot-Laborant,” which was implemented by
the team and then presented at “Millennium Innovation Awards.” As one of the members of
the team, Tamo Mikeladze explains, the contribution of gymnasium AIA GESS in carrying
out the project is significant. The pupils study STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering,
Mathematics) and work on various projects together with their mentor David Songhulashvili
there.
What is Robot-Laborant and how it was created? Tamo and her team members were
concerned about the fact that most children do not have access to the scientific laboratories,
what hinders the process of studying natural sciences.
“We wanted to establish the real, remotely controlled laboratory. Then we perfected this
idea with the help of our mentor and started working on it. We wanted to help those
students who have limited possibilities or live in remote places to get education not only
through books or internet, but conducting research and experiments.
What makes our devise innovative is that it enables students to conduct the researches in the
fields of physics, chemistry and biology from any part of the world remotely.
Moreover, using Robot-Laborant gives them an opportunity to get the information from
inaccessible and remote places,” explains Tamo Mikeladze.
According to 17 years old inventor, working on the project was quite was difficult and yet
very interesting.
"Implementation of any project is connected with many obstacles and of course we also faced
some problems, but gradually we managed to solve them and complete the project. Since we
are interested in science and innovations, we found out about the project “Millennium
Innovation Competition” long time ago. We wanted to take part before, and eventually we
came up with “Robot-Laborant.” It is impossible to achieve success without teamwork and
mutual understanding between the teammates. Accordingly, cooperation was the key to our
success while working on the project,” Tamo says.
