General Learning Outcome(s):

Develop number sense

Specific Learning Outcome(s):

Grade 8, Number SO 7 – Demonstrate an understanding of multiplication and division of integers,
concretely, pictorially and symbolically.

Formative Assessment(s):
● Exit slip
● Salute the general

What do you need to prepare/bring for this lesson?

● Cards, notes, worksheet, exit slip

2 hour class
Time Description

20 min Math Talk

● Have an addition and subtraction of integers on the board. Again this is in their heads so once
the students have had time to do the solution make sure to ask them the ways they solved the
problem in their mind, what techniques did they use.

Lesson
● https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yhoz1g35alw
30 min ● Go over the different ways to multiply: “copy” rule, properties. This is the same as basic
multiplication with the added sign of negative. Go over long multiplication rules as well.
● The students will be filing in their definitions in their notes. We will do two class practice
questions that they will add to their notes and then have time for them to do their own practice
and check it to make sure they are on the right track

20 min Activity
● Salute the general- the students will partner up (with social distancing) then they will get both
of their decks of cards, similar to the games above, reds are negative and blacks are positive.
The students will lay one card down on the table for both to see and then then flip one onto
their forehead (each student will be playing with their own deck so they will not have to touch
the other players) the student that sees the card will say the product and the player that does not
see both will have to guess what the card on their forehead is based on the product their partner
said and the card they can see. If the player guesses right they get a point, if they do not the
other player gets the point.

30 min Practice
● Once they have completed their game they will complete a practice sheet that gets
progressively harder throughout the page.

20 min Conclusion/ Exit slip day

Do a class recap, writing everything the students say on the board then finish the class with a formative
exit slip.
