SECTION 8 HOUSING CHOICE

VOUCHER PROGRAM
SECTION 8 PROVIDES HOUSING SUPPORT TO LOW-
INCOME HOUSEHOLDS BY PROVIDING RENTAL
ASSISTANCE TO FAMILIES IN PRIVATELY OWNED
HOUSING.

HOW IT WORKS
If you are granted Section 8, the housing

agency pays a portion of your monthly

rent by providing a direct rental subsidy

to the landlord.

You are responsible for paying the

difference between monthly rent and the

subsidy allocated by the housing agency.

The subsidy differs in size based on your

household’s income. On average, each

household will pay somewhere between

30% and 40% of its income on rent.

AM I ELIGIBLE?
Eligibility is based on the family's total

gross income. At least 75% of all

vouchers issued by a housing agency

must be targeted to households whose

total income does not exceed 30% of

the area median income. At least one

person in your household needs to
have legal documentation to be
living in the U.S. for the household to
apply for a voucher.

HOW DO I APPLY?
You can contact any of the Department of

Housing and Community Development’s

agencies to request an application or you

can download the Section 8 Housing

Choice Voucher Program application

below and submit a completed application

to any of the regional agencies.
