1.0 SCOPE:

This specification provides the minimum requirements of design,


manufacture, testing and supply of welding receptacles, convenience outlets
& plugs for locating in unclassified areas of offshore platforms.

2.0 CODES & STANDARDS:

2.1 The following codes and standards form a part of this specification:

NEC - National Electrical Code.

NEMA - National Electrical Manufacturer's Association.

BIS - Bureau of Indian Standards.

BSI - British Standards Institution.

ANSI - American National Standards Institute.

2.2 Any other international standard or code may be used in lieu of above
subject to prior approval of the company.

3.0 SITE CONDITIONS:

All the equipment shall be suitable for use in extremely harsh, marine
environments. The equipment shall be tropicalised and treated to protect the
same against the site conditions as specified in the Specification- “Site
Condition and Climate” and traces of H2S found in the atmosphere, if
specified in equipment data sheet.
All painting shall be in accordance with Specification- “Protective Coating”.

4.0 SCOPE OF SUPPLY:

The scope of supply through this specification shall include but not limited to
the following:

i) Three phase (415V, 63AMP, 50Hz), 4 wire industrial type welding


switch socket & plug.

ii) Single Phase (240V, 15A/5A AMP, 50Hz), 3 Wire industrial


type/domestic switch socket & plug.

iii) Weather proof cable glands, lugs & necessary hardware.

5.0 TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS:

5.1 GENERAL

5.1.1 All equipment shall be industrial type and weatherproof with enclosure
protection IP-55 suitable for installing in outdoor areas without any extra
weather protection.

5.1.2 The body of the equipment shall be cast metal or other suitable material and
shall be free from frictional sparking hazard.

5.1.3 All hardware such as nuts, bolts, washers etc. shall be cadmium plated.

5.1.4 The equipment shall be suitable for mounting on the vertical face of
wall/steel structure.

5.1.5 A set of special tools required for opening/maintenance of plug and sockets
shall be supplied along with the units.

5.2 THREE PHASE WELDING RECEPTACLES:

5.2.1 The weatherproof welding receptacles with interlocked switch shall be rated
for 30A/ 63A, 3-Phase, 415V, 50Hz, 4-Wire and shall be supplied complete
with cable termination accessories for 4 x 10 mm2 / 3-1/2 x 25mm2 PVC
insulated and sheathed armoured copper conductor FRLS cables
respectively. Two nos. cable entries from bottom and 2 nos. weatherproof
cable glands shall be provided on each receptacle for looping to other
receptacle. The unused entries shall be sealed through weatherproof plugs.

5.2.2 The receptacles shall be supplied with matching plug with cable termination
accessories suitable for 4 x 220 / 0.45mm (O.D. approx. 53mm) welding
cable. The plug shall be provided with round pins. The construction shall be
such that the engagement and disengagement shall be by two separate and
distinct movements and it shall not be by two separate and distinct
movements and it shall not be possible to Plug-in or withdraw the plug if the
circuit is 'on'. A built-in interlock switch shall be provide for the above
purpose. Caps shall be provided for each receptacle and connected to body
by metallic chain for covering the same when not in use. A scrapping earth
connection shall be provided between receptacle and plug.

5.2.3 Two nos external earthing terminals shall be provided on the body.

5.2.4 The welding receptacle shall be suitable for mounting on the vertical face of
a wall/ steel structure.

5.3 SINGLE PHASE PLUGS & SOCKETS:

5.3.1 Weatherproof switch socket units rated for 15A, 1-Phase, 240V, 50Hz, 3-
Wire (phase, neutral and earth) shall be supplied. Switch socket shall be
suitable for terminating two nos. 3 core 4 mm2 PVC insulated and sheathed,
armoured copper cables and 2 nos weatherproof cable glands shall be
provided on each sockets for looping to other sockets. The unused entries
shall be sealed through weatherproof plugs.

5.3.2 The socket shall be supplied with matching plug with cable-termination
accessories suitable for termination 3 X 4 mm2 (O.D.Approx. 19 mm) tinned
copper flexible wire insulated with rubber and overall sheath of
polychloroprene (PCP)/PVC insulated cables or any other type, if specified in
particular specification. The plug shall be provided with round pins.

5.3.3 Outdoor type sockets construction shall be such that the engagement and
disengagement shall be by two separate and distinct movements and it shall
not be possible to plug in or withdraw the plug if circuit is ‘ON’. A built in
interlock switch shall be provided for above purpose. Indoor type sockets (to
be located in enclosed rooms) shall be ordinary construction without above
interlock.

5.3.4 The sockets shall be provided with either a spring loaded hinged cover, or
with a cap connected through metallic chain, for covering the same when not
in use. A scrapping earth connection shall be provided between the plug
and socket. Earth pin of plug shall first engage with earth pin of switch
socket.

5.3.5 Suitable arrangement shall be provided to mount the units on vertical surface
of walls/ structures.

5.3.6 The plug assembly shall be mechanically rugged, light and shall not unduly
stress the socket or its pins when fitted on to the socket. The diameter of the
earth pin of the plug and socket shall be at least 1.1 times the diameter of
the phase pins.

6.0 TESTING AND INSPECTION:

Testing and inspection of equipment shall include but not necessarily limited
to the following:

6.1 A visual inspection shall be made to ensure that the finishing and
workmanship are upto the mark.

6.2 Company reserves the right to witness the final testing and inspection. Prior
intimation of at least 20 days shall be given to enable the Company or its
authorized representative to witness the test.

7.0 VENDOR DATA REQUIREMENT:

7.1 Catalogue, technical literature and GA drawing of offered equipment.

7.2 Copies of type test certificates.

8.0 CERTIFICATION:

All offered plug and sockets or those of similar design manufactured by


same vendor:
− Shall have been type tested by an authority approved by the
company
− Shall have been in continuous satisfactory service on offshore for a
minimum period of two years.
− Shall be having current certification/approval/listing by an agency
approved by company or UL or FM.

9.0 PACKING AND TRANSPORTATION:

The offered plugs and sockets alongwith their accessories shall be shipped
to site packed in wooded crates. They shall be wrapped with polythene
sheets, before being placed in the crates to prevent damage to finish. Crates
shall have skid bottom for handling.
