Expression Module

Project Plan
Carmen Sher

Description

My professional vision is a visual presentation of my career as an aspiring elementary

school teacher. The project is a mixture of media: sound, images, and text combined to
give a bit of background on why I chose this path and what I hope to accomplish, by
when.

Project Medium (Multimedia)

I checked out many types of multimedia to deliver this project but ended up choosing
Adobe Spark to make a video. My rationale is that a video combines music to persuade
the audience to feel a certain emotion while tying in text and images. I will be using this
media often in my career as an educator, so it made sense to use this medium.

Potential Benefits of Multimedia

One benefit of using a video medium to convey my passion and plan for my profession
is that it works for all types of learners. One thing I mentioned in the video is that I want
to teach in a way that fits each student uniquely to address their needs and learning
style. The video will help both visual and auditory learners.

Potential Challenges of Multimedia

One potential challenge of using Adobe Spark is that it will retain a watermark, it is not
consistently formatted across different platforms, and it limits freedom of text and image
placement. It would be good to use in lesson plans if the video is a simple concept, but
in order to overcome these challenges another program may be needed in place of it.

Artist Statement

In order to understand why I want to become an educator, it was important to

understand the influence educators have played in my life. Beginning with my very first
teacher Mrs. Orlo, teachers took on more than just a teacher role to me. From bringing
me to and from school, to feeding me, to clothing me and making sure I had the
supplies I needed to have a fair chance in school, it was never lost on me that they were
going above and beyond the call of duty. I spent every moment at school that I could,
throwing myself into my studies and even taking on a teacher role myself at times. My
teachers encouraged me to mentor and tutor my peers and younger students, giving me
opportunities to run different activities by myself and play an active role. It filled me with
pure happiness to emulate those most important to me. From very early on, I thought I
wanted to be a teacher when I grew up, but by the time I graduated high school, I had
no doubt. My first taste of real teaching was as an after school teacher assistant at the
Boys and Girls Club of York County. The students there were all at-risk youth, similar to
me, students who could easily fall through the cracks in the system and were at a high
risk to not graduate. I got a great sense of accomplishment from earning the trust of
these students and helping them with homework as well as emotional problems. After
nine years of figuring out my life, moving across the country, getting married, and
becoming a mom, I still yearned to pass on my love for learning and fulfill my dream of
teaching. The Starbucks SCAP scholarship allowed me to do that. I am now 2 years
away from graduating, a process 10 years in the making. Each class at ASU has
allowed me to refine my skills and hone in on my goal of becoming certified to teach
EC-6th grade in Texas. This project has given me the opportunity to visually show the
journey I’ve taken to get here and why I haven’t given up yet. The Adobe Spark medium
was a great storytelling tool because it allowed me to show my childhood and the
reasons why I want to teach, all the way up to present day and it appeals to more than
one type of audience because it is a multimodal experience that I hope to continue to
implement in my coursework and later in my classroom.
