What is a coronavirus?

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), coronaviruses are a family of viruses that
cause illnesses ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as severe acute
respiratory syndrome (SARS) and the Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS).

This VIRUS is thought to be related to the Huanan animal market in Wuhan which sells various
types of animal meat, including those that are not normally consumed. Corona virus or COVID-
19 is suspected to be carried by bats and other animals that humans eat until transmission occurs.

Symptoms of a Corona virus infection can occur within 2–14 days after exposure to the Corona
virus, but most people with COVID-19 experience symptoms after 11-12 days.

The following are the symptoms of COVID-19 in the first week:

 Fever ≥38 C
 Fatigue or weakness
 Coughing up phlegm
 Aches
 No appetite

To prevent infection and to slow transmission of COVID-19, do the following:

1. Wash your hands regularly with soap and water, or clean them with alcohol-based hand
rub.
2. Maintain at least 1 metre distance between you and people coughing or sneezing.
3. Avoid touching your face.
4. Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
5. Stay home if you feel unwell.
6. Refrain from smoking and other activities that weaken the lungs.
7. Practice physical distancing by avoiding unnecessary travel and staying away from large
groups of people.
