at the new Shuqaiq Phase 3 Desalination Plant and provided from Baysh Dam
WTP to the Abha, Samta and Jizan area and along the route to Mahayil and
Majardah. For this reason, the construction of four new separate pipeline systems
including pump stations and water tanks is required.

4.8 Protection of Concrete Works

4.8.1 Protection on Foundations and Channels
Foundations and water channels shall have a protection on all earth covered
faces of the underground part as follows:
- A penetrating bituminous primer applied in one coat
- A high build bituminous coating with a content of fibers, applied in minimum
three coats.
The total dry film thickness of the coating shall be not less than 1.0 mm.
The bottom side of the structure shall be protected by a preformed membrane
as specified above for all concrete structures.
The overlap between the membrane under the structure and the coating on
vertical faces shall be detailed by the Contractor and to the satisfaction of the
Engineer, making sure that all faces remain protected.
The bottom protection membrane (on the building concrete) shall be protected
by a concrete overlay.

4.8.2 Areas with Acid Spillage

Spillage of hydrochloric and sulphuric acid occurs in certain plant areas.
Concrete in such areas shall be protected by heavy duty acid proof tiles laid on
an acid proof membrane completely protecting the concrete against any ingress
of these or other similarly, aggressive substances.
The materials used shall have a documented resistance to the concentrations of
hypochlorite or acid which is expected in the area.

Crack control is mainly done by the limitation of the dimensions of the

construction parts that are poured at one time (length ≤ 6.0 m) and by the
limitation of the steel stresses.

4.10 Construction Joints

Construction joints are pre-planned and indicated in the construction drawings.
All these joints shall be equipped with PVC-water stops. In cases of construction
joints between base slabs and walls or columns, kickers are used. It must be
ensured by the contractor, that the concrete in the kickers is compacted and
cured in accordance to the specifications. Kickers at walls shall be poured in one
go with the base slab.

4.11 Subsoil conditions

According to Geotechnical Investigation Report.
