4.2 Cement
Portland Cement Type 1 according to ASTM C150 (Standard specification for
Portland Cement).
4.3 Aggregates
Aggregate size, quality and gradation are governed by the contract
specifications
[Specification C07, 2.4 (Fine Aggregates) and 2.5 (Coarse Aggregates)]. All
aggregates (heavy aggregates) shall comply with ASTM C33 or BS EN 12620
(Standard specification for concrete aggregates) with a maximum grain size of
40 mm.
Coarse aggregates shall be from natural sources or from crushing plants (double
broken). They shall be selected, re-crushed, finish screened and washed if
necessary.
4.9.2.1 Crack control for imposed loads – Cases (b) and (c)
According to BS EN 1992-1-1:2004 the width of the cracks shall be limited by
limitation of the bar diameter or by limitation of the bar spacing.
fct,eff mean value of the tensile strength (for strength class C50/60)
(=4.10 MPa – value of tensile strength after 28 days)
Table 3 Tensile strength of the concrete effective at the time when the cracks
first can be expected to occur

7 days 0.7788 3.19 MPa
14 days 0.9016 3.70 MPa
21 days 0.9621 3.94 MPa
The following calculations valid for the strength class C50/60 have been executed
with fct,eff = 3.2 MPa (age of the concrete when cracks first may occur: 7 days).
