CE 415: Pre-stressed Concrete and Industrial Structures

End Sem Exam: 26-11-2020: 9-10 to 10-40 hrs

Full Marks – 30
Time: 90 Mins
Answer all the questions; use of books, notes permitted
Assume any data, if necessary

1. (a) Write a brief note on ‘Hoyer’s effect’.

(b) Draw M-θ / P-δ plot to illustrate difference in behavior of beams, axially load columns and
beam-columns.
(c) Explain with necessary diagram three different modes of failure of beam sections for relative
change in the values of Tu and Mu .
(d) Explain – how influence of design life of structure is considered in evaluation of design wind
velocity.
(e) Explain with diagram – why members with zero axial load is provided in large roof truss of
industrial structures.
5@2=10

2. (a) Draw sample stress profile to highlight difference between the stress analysis for un-
propped and propped composite construction.

(b) A small industrial shed is having the following data:

Span of truss = 12 m (Fink type)

Rise of truss = 3 m
Eave above GL = 7 m
Spacing of trusses = 5 m
Spacing of purlins = 1.4 m

The shed is situated in industrial zone of Guwahati, on plain land. Determine the wind
load on one span of purlin when wind is normal to ridge.

3. (a) Explain – when & how influence shear on bending strength is taken into account.

(b) A wide flange W 310 x 310 x 143 beam-column has a height of 3.6 m and is pinned at both
ends. Check whether section strength is enough to support a design axial load of 500 kN
together with a major axis bending moment of 200 kNm applied at the top of the beam-
column. Assume grade Fe 250 steel. Geometric properties of the section are:

A = 18230 mm2, H (Overall height) = 323 mm

B (flange width) = 309 mm, tw = 14 mm
tf = 22.9 mm, Izz = 34760 cm4
Iyy = 11270 cm4, rz = 138.1 mm, ry = 78.6 mm
Zz = 2153 cm3, Zy = 729.4 cm3
