7. Effective Speech
At this stage the students have got over their stage
fright and the stage is set for further niceties of
speech craft to be inculcated into the speakers.
Stage fright, nervousness, distracting mannerisms
are all gone and got rid of; now it’s a case of
building up gradually. Since the students have
had fi ve years of basic speech training when they
reach this level, they are now given the freedom
of choosing their own topics. The students have
toprepare their own speeches. No teacher pre-
pared speeches are given hereafter except to
the very weak ones and that too on very rare
occasions. Topics are suggested only in case a
student is unable to select one on his or her own.
Students have to of course, to be monitored and
guided in the preparation of their speeches, they
are not allowed to come forward and speak any-
thing and everything they wish to. Special care
is taken to see that students use correct language
and appropriate vocabulary. Correction of speech
manuscripts once the students write them out is
a must, which they’ve got to do well ahead of the
day they are expected to deliver their speeches.

a) Better organization of speech topics with an
opening, a body and a closing.
b) Training on the use of body language in
enhancing the spoken word. Gestures, Facial
Expressions and Eye Contact.
c) Short Impromptu Speeches.
d) More Round Robin.
e) Training of School Assembly Speakers.
Assembly Speakers
The best speakers in class are selected to deliver
speeches and address the School Assembly. Be-
fore an assembly assignment is given to a student,
he or he should have at least three appearances
before his or her own class and the speaker should
be well trained as per the aims of the level he or
she is in.
Evaluation
Students will be regularly evaluated by the
teacherin charge. At the Intermediate Level
and Senior Level it will be a more elaborate
evaluation on - opening, body of speech (speech
development and logical presentation of ideas
and arguments), closing, preparation, manner/
posture, the use of body language - gestures, eye
contact and facial expressions, appearance, voice
– volume, use of notes, language & vocabulary
and speaking Time.

22. Speech & Drama

A sequence of exercises to develop relaxation, extend vocal range, support good breathing, posture,
develop team sprit and enhance creativity.
Poetry is used in the class in such a manner that the performance lends audience impact. Students are
encouraged to explore the context literally and artistically so that the meaning is appreciated and the
content experienced in terms of a performance. Group ensemble, rhythmic chants, music, movement,
song and dance are all synchronized as and when required. A wide range of poetry is used at this level so
that at least the basics of lyrical, narrative and dramatic verse are experienced. Some literary background
knowledge is shared with the students so the work of the poet is appreciated.

Creative Writing
Creative Writing is explored to enhance both the students’ vocabulary and appreciation of prose poetry
and the text.

Sight Reader
Reading in terms of a performance is encouraged using the text for the grade – ‘Boy – Tales of Childhood’

Activities are also devised from the reader to lend to creative writing and extend the students’vocabulary.
Solo and group Mime and improvisation activities are devised from the text. These are assessed
progressively. Sight reading is assessed individually.
The Theory of Speech is explored and exploited via all class activities. The biography of the
author and an awareness of his writing are taught to the class.
