“The cause of (and solution to) all life’s problems” is derived from Arabic (Al-

kuhul or Al-kohl, especially those obtained by sublimation; later ‘a distilled or rectified spirit’).

However, the word ‘alcohol’ originally referred to a method of manufacturing makeup, among

other things (Mayer, 2018).

Slang Names for Alcohol

Alcohol is a colorless volatile flammable liquid which is produced by the natural

fermentation of sugars (Nordegren, 2002). It is the intoxicating constituent of wine, beer, spirits,

and other drinks, and is also used as an industrial solvent and as fuel. Following are the slang
