1. INTRODUCTION

M/s Green Constro Infra Pvt. Ltd. has engaged M/s Geo Technologies as Consultant to carryout soil
investigation work for the proposed construction of Community Banquet Hall at Pati (V), Patancheru
(M), Telangana. It is informed that the proposed building comprises steel structure.

Soil investigation was carried out by drilling four (4) bore holes.

The results of these investigations and recommendations are presented in this Report.

2. FIELD INVESTIGATIONS

DRILLING:

150 mm / NX size rotary core drilling was performed. The size of the casing used was 150 mm / 90
mm.

All the field operations were conducted as per IS: 1892.

The boreholes were drilled at the locations shown in the site plan (Fig.1). Depth of drilling was 10 m.

Standard Penetration Tests (SPT):

Standard Penetration Tests were conducted in accordance with IS: 2131-1981, in soil and
completely weathered rock (SDR) layers, and SPT samples were collected.

Field Bore Logs:

All the details collected from the field operations are recorded in Field Bore Log Chart (devised by
combining the Record of Boring of IS: 1892 and Drilling Log of IS: 4464).The field bore log charts
are given in Annexure-1.

Collection of soil samples

Split-spoon samples and disturbed soil samples were collected from boreholes at frequent intervals.

All the soil samples collected were properly packed, labeled and transported to Geo Technologies
Soil Testing Laboratory at Hyderabad.

3. LABORATORY TESTING

3
GEO TECHNOLOGIES

The samples were tested at Soil Testing Laboratory of GEO TECHNOLOGIES at Hyderabad.
The following tests were performed on the Soil samples:
 Specific gravity (IS: 2720: part3 – 1980)
 Grain size distribution (IS 2720 part 4 – 1985)
 Atterberg’s Limits (IS 2720 part 5 – 1985 and IS 2720 – part 2 – 1973)
 Unit weight (IS 2720 part 29 – 1988)
 Direct Shear test (IS 2720 – part 13 – 1986)
No cores were recovered in SDR strata.

4. RESULTS
Fig. 2 gives the combined Log of bore holes.
Table-1 gives the details of the boreholes drilled.
Table-2 gives the results of lab tests of soil samples.
Appendix gives the calculations of SBC for foundations.
Annexure-1 gives the Field Bore Log Charts.
Annexure-2 gives IS Codes referred.

5. SUB SOIL PROFILE

Based on the bore log data, the subsoil profile in the site can be broadly generalized as follows:

Depth, m Strata N value

0.00 – 5.00 Filling 2–6
5.00 – 10.00 Soft Disintegrated Rock (SDR) >50

No water was seen in the bore holes at the time of drilling.

6. RECOMMENDATIONS

4
GEO TECHNOLOGIES

The following recommendations are made for the proposed construction of Community Banquet
Hall at Pati (V), Patancheru (M), Telangana. These are based on four (4) bore holes.

1) The subsoil profile in the area is generalized as follows:

Depth, m Strata N value

0.00 – 5.00 Filling 2–6
5.00 – 10.00 Soft Disintegrated Rock (SDR) >50

2) No water was seen in the bore holes at the time of drilling.

3) It is given to understand that the proposed building comprises steel structure.

4) In view of filled loose soil up to 5 m depth, foundations are recommended at a depth of 6.5 m
below EGL resting in SDR (i.e., at 1.5 m into SDR).

5) Safe Bearing Capacity for foundations in SDR is recommended as 40 t / m2.

6) Foundations should be backfilled with well-compacted gravel.

7) All loose boulders from foundation level should be removed before placement of PCC bed.

Appendix: Calculation of SBC for Open foundations in SDR

Foundations at 1.5 m in SDR:

A. Based on 'N' Values, Teng’s equations:
a) Shear criterion:
Allowable bearing pressure is estimated (with F.S. = 3.0) using the equation
q (Allowable) = 1/18 [2 x N x N B Rw + 6 (100 + N x N) D Rq]
Where,
N = SPT Value (No. of blows for 30 cm penetration) taken as 40.
B = Width of the footing, assumed as 2.0 m
D = Depth of foundation, assumed as 0.5 m into SDR.
Rq and Rw are correction factors for water table. As no water table is encountered, Rq and Rw are
taken as 1.0.
Substituting these values in above equation;
q (Allowable) = 638kN / sq. m
b) Settlement Criterion:
For a settlement of 40 mm (N =40, B = 2 m),
Allowable bearing capacity = 12.25 N [(B + 0.3) / B] = 563 KN/sq m
B. Based on IS: 12070: According to IS: 12070 (Table-3), recommended SBC for 'Very poor' rock
(Classification No. V) is 30 – 45 t / sq m.
SBC for foundations in SDR is recommended as 40 tonnes per sq m.
