With a Press of a Button

By: Bader Issa

Since the day mobile phones got introduced, we have been on constant connectivity with many people around
the world. With a press of a button, you can call your uncle or your beloved one. And its even possible while
writing this article that I got bored and started using my phone to talk to someone. The point is, Martin Cooper
was the great grandfather who introduced the first mobile phone, which lead to many and many new phones
similar to the galaxy fold, and apples iPhone X.
Back in the days during 1947, people used to have phones built in their cars, but you had to wait at least 30
minutes until you can call. Which was due to the distribution of the cells. Cells are the towers that are used to
connect a signal with a certain frequency to the other side. Which were distributed by the various phone
companies, including AT&T.
Martin Cooper, wasn’t at all a simple man, as he graduated from the Illinois institute of Technology and got a
Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. Later he joined the US navy and participated in the Korean War.
The Bachelor’s degree played a role in allowing him to join the teletype corporation. Later he started working in
Motorola. Motorola and AT&T had a huge competition regarding phones, so AT&T started developing the cells
of the phone regions. Making Motorola promote Cooper in for an urgent project.
Through the inspiration given from a famous comic cartoon book “Dick Tracy”, Cooper was inspired from a
watch that allowed a person to call other people through the phone. And Boom, in April 3 rd, 1973 the big fat
baby, was the nickname of the first phone, which was called DynaTAC (standing for Dynamic Adaptive Total
Area Coverage). And the cost of one phone was $3,995
To conclude, DynaTAC played a huge role in improving the phone industry, especially this phone as it sold many
copies. Showing how small inspiration from a cartoon can play an impact in a huge industry that impacted our
world entirely. Showing how even the smallest inspiration can impact a huge world.
