2. What flaws in the major characters of the play make Death of a Salesman a

tragedy? Elaborate.

 Linda Loman is nothing more than just a suburban homemaker. Do you

agree or disagree? Argue with a thorough analysis on the portrayal of her
character in the play.

What flaws in the major characters of the play make Death of a
Salesman a tragedy? Elaborate.

The flaws of major character are mythological. Main character is the tragic hero; he
makes flaw in searching for success in every stage of life. American dream is not easy actually.
Arther Millar make a critics of American dream in this play. To full fill American dream, they
have to be hard worker and innovative. The major character’s flaws are the symbol of tragic. By
the flaws he has been separated each of their point of view.

Willy Loman: Willy Loman is a dreamful person and often obsessive. But he never doesn’t try to
know, how he will get success in life. He always thought about success but he doesn’t think how
to achieve it. Until at the end of life to achieve success, he struggles to fulfill his success, but he
never thought he is only a salesman, what is important to him. He was inspired by the Dave,
who was a successful salesman, to be another Dave, willy chose a salesman work. But it was his
wrong decision. This job didn’t help him. As well as, he borrowed money from his friend for
show up and talk lie to his family that he is going ahead to his dream. On the other side Biff
Loman was a famous footballer in school. But willy think he is appropriate in achieving his
dream, and all of the dream of willy shift to biff. This is another mistake of willy. Because every
people have their own dream which he or she love, in this context success can achieve easily.
But when willy shift his dream inside Biff. Where he destroys his sun dream or innovativeness.
willy encourage biff in stooling basketball an ideal father he should control his children. He
always congratulates Biff in any good or bad thing. Finally, he become older and fail to achieve
success but in this step of life to fulfill his another dream he makes another great mistake by
doing suicide.

Biff Loman: Biff Loman is follower of his father, he thought his father is an idle for him, he
believed all the story of his father. Finally, it can say that he is a catalyst his believe break up
after few days. Here his flaw is believing everything of his father. Their point of view was one
lanes. It is a great flaw.
Happy Loman: He is not loyal in any character, and has no responsibility to others, he totally
derives by sexism. He is very close character with his father. Happy was over confident like his
father, he is also unrealistic. He has no care with anything. He was liar.as if he has a great
ambition but no evidence in his work. As we can say that Happy has the similarity with his
father. Beside of this to create a favorable situation, he tells lie. which prove that he follows his
father philosophy.

Linda Loman: She is the only one women who always try to support willy, she is always
realistic and positive minded but she never interferes her husband’s wrong philosophy which is
the only one flaws. She knows everything of her husbands, but she did not protest or suggest to
her husband not to thinking about his unrealistic thing. She never told to her sons not to
thinking about as like his father. She only supports her husband. she doesn’t support her sons
to make success in realistic way but the lady was only one realistic character.

Flaws are the point of growing tension, as willy Loman’s flaws makes him tragic hero
and all other characters’ flaws are supporting him to be a successful tragic hero.

Suburban woman and Loman

Linda is a character who is in an awkward circumstance. She lives with her husband and
always try to protect him from others critics as well as from his self-critics. She is nothing more
than a suburban homemaker as a suburban home maker she supports her husband in every
times of life. she has no opinion against her husband opinion as well as when willy has bad idea.
Which is the character of a suburban home maker.

Once suburban home maker is normally not much educated, she has no right or
capability to protest husband opinion. She only can love her husband and she think that all are
good which husband do. she worships her husband. when willy told about day dream story to
his children and inspire about all, which are not practical but here as a mother Linda didn’t
aware their sons. Which proved that as Linda lives in old city but her character is like a
suburban home maker. A educated woman can judge any opinion of her husband as well as
others. But here Lynda never oppose her husband philosophy that short cut never be the way
of success.

On the other hand, as Linda can’t depend on her own. Because they are not
economically sufficient. She had to totally depend on her husband income. For that reason,
Linda can’t oppose husband opinion, she only work as home maker and obviously like a
suburban home maker.

Before of her married, she grew up that kind of family, where their culture was like that a
woman can’t talk over the husband, even her husband is wrong. This statement provide
evidence that Lynda born in suburban class family. In suburban or village, we can see this kind
of family.
 Finally, I will strongly support that Linda is a suburban homemaker. Her affection and
patient is very rare in urban home maker. Urban home maker wants to show her self-existence.
Not like the Linda’s personality.
