R Q

This tips will help you visualize the area of a circle.

 A circle is a set of all points in a plane that are at fixed distance from a
point called center.
 A radius is a line segment from the center to a point on the circle.
 A diameter is a line segment which passes through the center of a circle
whose endpoints are on the circle.
 The length of radius is one half the length of a diameter of a circle.
 A compass is an instrument used to draw a circles.

Lesson 82: Derives a Formula in Finding the Area of a Circle .

(M5ME-IVa-73)

Explore and Discover!

What is a circle? Can you derive a formula for finding the area of a circle?

This tips will help you to derive a formula for finding the of a circle.

 Draw a circle and fill its area.

 Divide it into large equal parts and arrange them into rectangular
formation.
 Divide the circle into small equal pieces and arrange them in the same
manner.
 Again divide the circle into even more smaller pieces and arrange them in
rectangular formation.
 We can keep on dividing the circle into small, smaller or the smallest you
can make a perfect rectangle.
 So the area of a circle is equal to the area of rectangle which is equal to
base times height.
 The height of the rectangle is equal to the radius of the circle.
 To find the base we need to look up the circumference of the circle and
when we compared the base and the circumference we can see that the
base is equal to one half of the circumference.
 Remember that the circumference is equal to 2Пr when we combine it
with one half the two’s cancel out and the base is equal to Пr.
 So now base times height becomes Пr times r, combine the r’s together we
can get Пr2 which is equal to the area of the circle.
 So Пr2 is used calculate the area to any size circle.

the volume of a cube whose side has the given length. For example,
a cubic centimetre (cm3) would be the volume of a cube whose sides
are one centimetre (1 cm) in length.
In the International System of Units (SI), the standard unit of volume is
the cubic metre (m3). Metric System also includes,

The conference room received the afternoon sun. The room temperature
was
found to be 35.6◦C. The janitor turned on the air-conditioner unit. After a few
minutes the thermometer recorded it to be 25.3◦C. What was the estimated
change in
temperature?

Study the solution below.

Round each of the temperature to its highest place value; then

subtract the rounded numbers.

35.6◦C 36◦C
- 25.3◦C - 25◦C
11◦C

Answer: There are about 11◦C change in temperature.

You can find the actual difference to check if the estimated

difference is reasonable.

Explore and Discover

When Liam didn’t feel well on Sunday night, his mother took his body
temperature. The thermometer indicated Liam’s temperature 0.9 degrees above
normal. What was Liam’s body temperature on Sunday night?
The normal body temperature of a human being is about 37 ◦C. If Liam’s
body temperature was 0.9 degrees above normal, his body temperature was 37.9
◦C.
The temperature of an object is a measure of how hot or cold it is.
Thermometers are marked with a scale which indicates the temperature.
They contain mercury which goes up when the temperature is hot and goes
down when the temperature is cold. On the Celsius scale, which is used in most
countries including the Philippines, ice melts at 0 degrees and water boils at 100
degrees. The symbol ◦C is used for Celsius temperatures. The Fahrenheit scale,
on which ice melts at 32 ◦F and water boils at 212 ◦F is still used in other
countries like the United States. The symbol ◦F is used for Fahrenheit
temperatures.
