1.0 PURPOSE
The purpose of this Technical Bulletin is to inform personnel of Progressing Cavity Pumping
Systems terms and definitions.
2.0 SCOPE
This technical bulletin applies to PCP assembly and testing, distribution, operations and Global
Business Unit.
3.0 DEFINITIONS
Actual Capacity
Volumetric capability determined through functional testing for a specific product at specific test
conditions. Typically the capacity identified during functional testing at zero differential pressure.

Actual Flow Rate


Volume of fluid pumped per unit of time during the functional test.

Actual Volumetric Efficiency


Volumetric efficiency expressed as a percentage based on the actual capacity. Always 100%
efficient at zero differential pressure.

As per supplier/manufacturer specification


Product follows specifications or practices set out by the supplier or manufacture of that product.
The product does not fully comply to or allow certification to an internal standard, and may also
be different between suppliers or manufactures of the same product.

Capacity
A measure of the amount of space within the remaining stator/rotor cavity which can be filled by
a liquid (or a gas).
1 m3/day/100rpm = 6.290 bbl/day/100rpm
1 m3/day/100rpm = 0.001 m3/day/rpm
1 m3/day/100rpm = 6.944 ml/rpm

Certification
Identification of the standard the product was manufactured towards.

Conveyance Method
Methodology for how the PC Pump is installed or operated. Example Conventional or Tubing,
Insert (AY or Y).

Cross Section Style


The model cross sectional profile of the rotor and stator defined by the basic design
methodology, such as Conventional, Uniform Thickness, etc.

Differential pressure, ΔP, or “Delta P”


Difference between two pressure points, typically the inlet and discharge pressure.

Discharge Pressure
Pressure at the exit of the pump

Elastomer Code
Identification of the elastomer type combined with an identifier for the specific elastomer
formulation. Elastomer type is identified to accordingly to common elastomer standards such as,
Nitrile Elastomer (MN or HN), Hydrogenated Nitrile Elastomer (HNBR), or Fluoro Elastomer
(FKM). The identifier to the specific elastomer formulation or compound is as per
supplier/manufacturer specification.

Fluid Temperature
The temperature of the functional test fluid

Friction Torque
Resistance to rotation the rotor (inside the stator) that is dependent upon factors including (but
not exclusive to), pump geometry and interference fit between rotor and stator. Typically can
only be determined through measurement during operation or function testing at zero pressure
differential, or by subtracting the calculated actual hydraulic torque from the total torque.

Functional Test
The performance testing standard or requirement to which the product was verified to in order to
satisfy specific required performance criteria based on application conditions specified by the
user/purchaser. For each application, the users/purchasers require information that allows them
to a) verify the functionality of the pumps delivered by suppliers/manufacturers; b) determine the
suitability of each pump for each specific application.
ISO F1: functional hydraulic test.
ISO F2: functional evaluation without bench testing.
As per supplier/manufacturer specification.

Functional Test Type – Efficiency


A nominal efficiency (greater than 0%) based on rated pressure or a percentage of rated
pressure (< or = 100% of Rated Pressure).

Functional Test Type – Max Pressure


A nominal efficiency requirement of 0% based on rated pressure or a percentage of rated
pressure (< or = 100% of Rated Pressure).

Geometry Configuration
The model cross sectional profile defined by the ratio of lobes on the rotor to lobes on the stator,
1:2 = single lobe, 2:3 = multi-lobe.

Head
Pressure created by a given height (or depth) of water column at its bottom end, expressed as
“foot head” or “meter head”. It is independent of the amount of water, the pressure head of a 10
foot high 2 inch diameter pipe is the same as that of a 10 foot high 2 foot diameter pipe.

Hydraulic Torque (Actual)


Torque induced by the differential pressure or head across the pump, based on the Actual
Capacity from the functional test.
Hydraulic Torque (ft*lb) = Actual Capacity (m3/day/100rpm) x Head (m) / 125

Hydraulic Torque (Estimated)


Torque induced by the differential pressure or head across the pump, can be calculated using
the Nominal Capacity or Validated Capacity (more accurate estimate)
Hydraulic Torque (ft*lb) = Nominal Capacity (m3/day/100rpm) x Head (m) / 125

Identifier
A sequence of characters used to identify or refer to an element, such as the model, options, or
configurations, within the product; may change or be modified over the life of the product if the
product changes.

ISO
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is an independent, non-governmental
international organization. Through its members, it brings together experts to share knowledge
and develop voluntary, consensus-based, market relevant International Standards that support
innovation and provide solutions to global challenges. International Standards give world-class
specifications for products, services and systems, to ensure quality, safety and efficiency. They
are instrumental in facilitating international trade.

ISO 15136
Applicable to those products meeting the definition of progressing cavity pumps (PCP) included
in ISO 15136-1 and ISO 15136-2.

ISO 15136-1
Provides requirements for the design, design verification and validation, manufacturing and data
control, performance ratings, functional evaluation, repair, handling and storage of progressing
cavity pumps for use in the petroleum and natural gas industry. Connections to the drive string
and tubulars are not covered in ISO 15136-1:2009. ISO 15136-1 establishes requirements for
characterization and testing of stator elastomer material, design validation and functional
evaluation and provides information for PCP elastomer selection and testing, installation, start-up
and operation guidelines, equipment selection and application guidelines, functional specification
form, used pump evaluation, drive string selection and use, repair and reconditioning procedures
and auxiliary equipment. Equipment not covered by the requirements of ISO 15136-1 includes
bottom-drive systems except for the PCP components, drive-string components and auxiliary
equipment such as tag bars, gas separators and torque anchors.

ISO 15136-2
Provides requirements for the design, design verification and validation, manufacturing and data
control, performance ratings and repair of progressing cavity pump surface-drive systems for use
in the petroleum and natural gas industry. Equipment not covered by ISO 15136-2, unless
integral by design, includes bottom drive systems, sucker rods, polished rod clamps, stuffing
boxes, electrical controls, instrumentation, external power transmission devices, auxiliary
equipment, such as belts, sheaves and equipment guards.

Major Repair
Any activity beyond the scope of retesting that includes machining, welding, straightening,
recoating, or other manufacturing operations that restore the equipment to its original
performance.

Max Pressure
Maximum discharge pressure the pump achieved during functional testing when operated at a
flow rate of 0, result may be limited by functional testing equipment.

Mechanical Pump Efficiency


Measure of the effectiveness of the pump to transform the energy and power that is input to the
device (Power Input) into an output force and fluid movement (Power Output) expressed as a
percentage.
Mechanical Pump Efficiency (%) = (Power Output / Power Input) x 100

Model Brand Name


Supplier/manufacturer's identifier to distinguish between products.

Model Configuration
A descriptive item to identify a configuration of an existing model that is different from the
conventional or standard configuration. Example: Top Tier (TT), Metal Lock (MK), Enhanced
Elastomer Thickness (EE).

Model Identifier
A descriptive item to identify a specific design group or to differentiate between different models
of the same nominal capacity. Example: Fatboy (FB), Small (SM), Large (LG), New (N).

Nominal Capacity
Published volumetric capability based on theoretical calculations and adjusted for commercial
purposes, not a rating.

Nominal Head
Published nominal head or lift based on theoretical calculations and adjusted for commercial
purposes, not a rating.

Nominal Volumetric Efficiency


Volumetric efficiency expressed as a percentage based on the nominal capacity. May be greater
or less than 100% efficient at zero differential pressure since it is a reference to Nominal
Capacity, not Actual Capacity.

Non-ISO
Product completed as per supplier/manufacturer specification, not fulfilling all or a portion of the
global ISO 15136-1 equipment standard.

PCP Rotor Length Code


Descriptive identifier for additional length added to the rotor in reference to a standard length
rotor. From standard each “X” is equivalent of +8 in in rotor length and increase in tagbar pin
distance away from the stator.
STD = +0in, XL = +8in, XXXL = +24in
Example: 15-1400 STD 178 in, meaning a 15-1400 XXXL = 202 in (178 in + 24 in)

Percent (%) of Rated Pressure


Percentage of the pump rated pressure where the required efficiency during the functional test
was taken.

Power Input
Amount of shaft power require to rotate the rotor within the stator at the speed and torque
identified.
Horsepower (HP) = Speed (rpm) x Torque (ft*lb) / 5252

Power Output
The amount of fluid power generated at the flow rate and differential pressure identified.
Horsepower (HP) = Pressure (psi) x Flow (gpm) / 1714

Quality Control Grades


Identification of the quality standard or requirement the product was inspected to
ISO Q1: highest level of quality control
ISO Q2: intermediate level of quality control
ISO Q3: basic level of quality control
As per supplier/manufacturer specification

Rated Pressure
The designed rated differential pressure capability of the pump

Rotation Direction
The rotation direction of the rotor within the stator when looking at the fluid discharge end of the
pump.

Rotor Size Code


Descriptive identifier for the specific size of the rotor major and minor dimensions for a given
manufactures pump model.

SBLK
Progressing Cavity Pump raw stator or stator blank

SBLK Manufacturer Date


The date identified on the SBLK to identify when it was manufactured

Stator Configuration
A descriptive item specific to the stator to identify a configuration of an existing model that is
different from the conventional or standard configuration. Example Heavy Wall (HW), Slimhole
(SH)

Target Temp (Fluid)


Desired fluid temperature at which the equipment is tested based upon all relevant well design
criteria identified by the user/purchaser.

Torque @ No Load
Friction Torque at zero pressure differential

Total Torque @ Test Pressure, Total Torque at a specified differential pressure.


Friction + Hydraulic Torque (Actual) = Total Torque

Total Torque
The sum of all torques combined during operation
Friction + Hydraulic Torque = Total Torque

Tube External Temperature


The temperature of the stator tube during functional test

Unique Identifier (Serial Number)


Any identifier which is guaranteed to be unique among all identifiers used for those objects and
for a specific purpose; typically does not change for life of product. WFT PCP uses serial
numbers as a unique identifier, assigned sequentially for rotors and stators, and combined rotor
and stator serial numbers create a complete pump serial number.
