ASSESSMENT; Literary Text: Makamisa by J.P. Rizal (Source Philippine Literature by Linda R.

Bascarra et.al.)

1. Give the sketch of each character in the story.

According to what I’ve read, there are prominent characters that always show to the event of the
story. First is Pari Agaton, he is the popular head priest of their small town Tulig, he lead the homily with
cheerfulness not until one day. Pari Agaton is every angry in front of many people inside the church while
leading the mass and cause it to finish the mass so fast without sincerity. Aleng Anday, the who prepare
the coffee of Pari Agaton and one time she was slapped by the Priest because she served him a too hot
coffee. Kapitan Tibo the rival of Kapitan Lucas in the story specifically in politics. Kapitan Lucas, he was
very fond of the head priest Pari Agaton and one of the former captain of barangay Tulig. Marcela, the
beautiful daughter of Kapitan Lucas. Teniente Mayor Tato and Jues de Paz Segundo the parishioners who
usually meet Pari Agaton with Kapitan Lucas.

2. What is bothering Pari Agaton?

In my perspective, I don’t read any statement in the story that bothering Pari Agaton. Maybe this is
because of the present from him that he gift to Marcela, and Marcela refuse to accept it. Or maybe because
of the unorganized events that they are preparing for the upcoming holy week that was assigned to him.
Furthermore, that they he is irritable and has been triggered when he sipped his hot coffee that burnt his
lips.

3. Why are the parishioners hesitant to see Pari Agaton after the mass?

The group of parishioners are hesitant to see Pari Agaton after the mass, because they witnessed
how he behaves during the mass. The people who have attended the mass are also curious to what he
acted because they know that it is not what how he usually lead the mass, he practically lead this with
formality and better way. All of them scared that they might irritated Pari Agaton and triggered his anger
when they present themselves to him, that’s why they are very hesitant to see him.

4. What excesses of the Spanish friars are depicted in the story?

As we all known and usually written in our history books, the Spanish friars during this era are
brutal and ill-mannered as if they are not religious. There is no word of pity during their colonization, they
punish all Filipinos who have done something against their will by “panggagarote”. People are force to pay
taxes and even gave the foods they only have just to avoid punishments. The friars receive so much money
and goods from Filipinos without even losing a single drop of their sweat. They are superior in all aspect
because Filipino falsely worships them. The best example of the friars in the story is Pari Agaton who
typically perverts after beautiful girls during the mass he lead. All events held in the church should be paid
such as baptism, burials, and weddings and he except those people who bribed him especially those
people that are rich and have position in the government.

5. How should the story end?

In my opinion, this novel should be end through the reason of Pari Agaton’s behaviour during one
of the mass, why he acted like that. As it is the continuation of the two novel that Rizal published, the story
should end with realistic reason of the priest bad manners. It should be revealed to end the curiosity of the
readers and audience who have read the novel. I think Jose Rizal had a reason to all sorts of conflict takes
place to the story, maybe this is just the beginning of his novel and more should be written.

6. Give the elements of the novel as a literary genre.

The plot of the story is takes place in the town of Tulig, where the prominent and influential Parish
Leader is well known as substantial, realistic and properly performs the religious sacraments in the masses.
Unexpectedly, while he is leading a mass one time, he became angry that leads him to show his true
personality to his people who know him as a better Parish Leader. Of course, many of them become
curious of what he acted while doing the mass especially those people who closed to him. Because of what
had happen they immediately approach the priest.

The theme of the story is basically all about Filipinos during Spanish era that colonized us and
introduced their religion to every citizen.

The setting of the story is in the town of Tulig, where they gather every Sunday morning to attend
mass.

The conflict is obviously because of Pari Agaton who has a bad behaviour the he hidden long time
ago. And display it one day during the mass.

The characters are, Pari Agaton, Aleng Anday, Kapitan Lucas, Kapitan Tibo, Teniente Mayor Tato,
Marcela, and Juez de Paz Segundo. The point of view ov the story are in the in the first point of view of the
characters.

7. To what genre of the novel does the text belong? Give its characteristics.

In my perspective and based on Jose Rizal first two novels, this unfinished novel depicted the
genre of realistic fiction. Those events and scene in the story was actually happened in the past years he
lived. He just wrote this novel in a way that the characters and real persons are in different name or
fictitious characters. Those places and people in the story may be lived in the past and represent some
notable people in their times. The problems and conflicts had happened in their time may truly takes
places. And those conflicts help the readers and its audience to have their own realistic solation. Many may
read this as realistic fiction because of its content written by our national hero.
I. Analyze each of the following statement. Write PHILIPPINE if it is true and LITERATURE if it is incorrect
then, replace/correct the word/phrase that makes it wrong.

PHILIPPINE 1. Southern Tagalog Region is now divided into two: the CALABARZON and the MIMAROPA.

people living by the forest.

1898.

For your MIDTERM PROJECT, write a reflection paper about the movie Goyo: The Boy General and form a
sound judgment about the factors that precipitated the Philippine Revolution of 1896 as shown in the
movie.

Goyo: The Boy General

Reaction Paper
The movie Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral is a story of one of our heroes, Gregorio Del Pilar. It is a
continuation of the first film Heneral Luna. The beginning of the movie takes place immediately after the
events of “Heneral Luna” where Philippines were still in a state of war. The Americans began to take tighter
hold in our country and President Aguinaldo was trying his best to sustain his revolutionary government.
General Gregorio del Pilar was said to be the youngest in there volutionary government at the age of 24.
He was was one of the youngest generals during the Philippine Revolution and the Philippine-American
War, earning him the moniker “Boy General.” He fought bravely for Aguinaldo and took all Aguinaldo’s
orders. He was the favorite soldier of President Aguinaldo due to his undying loyalty to the President.
President Aguinaldo fully trusted Goyo and promoted him to become a General that would lead the
revolutionary forces in Nueva Ecija and Bulacan against the Americans. Goyo also sought to eliminate
Aguinaldo’s enemies including the Bernal brothers who were loyal to Luna and their principles. This is not
an unknown fact for many as this was how Goyo has been portrayed in Philippine history. What struck me,
however, was his weak side symbolized by a man he and his men executed. This man made a recurrent
appearance in Goyo’s mind, shouting things such as “Tahol, Goyo, tahol!” which evidently made Goyo very
disturbed. I would like to interpret this as the pressure he was under, being an exemplary soldier trying to
meet high expectation especially that of Aguinaldo. The film also shows that what happened years ago are
still happening today. Like how our politics work, manipulating the minds of the people and creating false
news just to achieve their evil plans. Furthermore, a strong identification of extra-judicial killing for those
who are against the government or to those who are not a friend of the administration can be seen
throughout the movie.
