Broken Family: It’s Implication to Senior High School Student’s Academic

Performance at Siocon National High School

Introduction

Broken home is a family that splits or separates for several reasons like illness, divorce

and other issues. This leads to children being raised by broken family, stepparents or

pthers not related to the biological parents. The break-up of a family has many negative

impacts to children, such as developing emotional issues pertaining to anger,

resentment, loneliness and depression ( ).

According to Fraser (2004), psychological home condition arise mainly from illegitimacy

of the children, the label of adopted child, broken home, divorce, separation and

parental deprivation are likely to cause poor or abnormal adjustment. Life in a broken

home can be stressful for boyh the child and the parents. Such families are faced with

the challenges of inadequate resources, social, academic and emotional problems

(Schultz, 2006). Rochlkepartain (2013) added that family structure plays a great role on

children’s adjustments. Parents are probably the actor with the dearest undimensional

interest in high level of their children’s adjustment (Levine, 2001).

In the Philippines, family is one of the most Influential factors in society. Filipino parents

are important to every child and it helps the youth to develop good behavior which
affects the outlook of every Filipino child’s future. However, the separation of two couple

nowadays are one of the common issues where many Filipino families have gone

through. Some of the couples survive and fix their marriages but many of them fail. Most

Filipino parents separate, some of them get an annulment and those who cannot afford

an annulment just have their new family informally ( JB Abalos, 2017 ).

In Siocon National High School, where the researcher is currently enrolled. There are

around 8 students from grade 11 to grade 12 who came from a broken family. Family

background influence on the child’s psychological, emotional, social and economic

state. In this context, the researcher would like to determine whether or not broken

family affect the academic performance of students. Specifically, it would like to know if

the family background have impact on Students academic performance.


Scope and the limitation of the Study

This study is conducted at Siocon National High School located at BarangaySiocon,

Compostela, Davao de Oro. This study is limited to Senior High School students who

are experiencing living in a broken family. It will take into consideration how the

phenomena of broken homes affects the financial and self-worth of students leading to

its impact on their academic performance.

Significance of the Study

This study will give significance to the students who are experiencing living in a broken

family and that will assist teachers, counselors and administrators to provide them

information needed to understand the factors that affects children from broken home,

and that they can better appreciate the behaviors and attitudes of the children they

teach or counsel.

To the student the study could serve as a tool in making them aware of the

performance and attitude they show or performed.

To the teacher and counselors it serve them as a reference in dealing with the student

behaviors and gestures conducted. Thus, teacher could also aware the attitudes of the

students who experienced broken family.


This study could be useful to guide the school administration to reform guidance to the

student who experienced broken family.

Statement of the Problem

The main problem in this study to determine the Senior High School students at Siocon

National High School from broken homes and to know whether or not it affects their

academic performance. Therefore, the focus of this study is to clear ambiquities through

finding out how broken homes affect the academic performance of students.

Specifically, it seeks answer to the following questions:

1. How many Senior HighSchool at Siocon National High School came from broken

home?

2. What are the academic performances of Senior High School Students from

Broken Home at Siocon National High School?

3. Does broken home affect Senior High School students academic performance in

terms of

3a. lack of parental care, love and affection.

3b. lack of parental security


3c. lack of parental discipline.
