Q1.
a. How Shockley’s equations explains the forward and reverse characteristics
of junction diode?

b. How the dynamics resistance (rd of junction diode can be estimated by the
26 mv
formula rd = I . (Prove using Shockley’s equation)
D

Q2.
a. Explain in your own words the terms resistivity, bulk resistance, ohmic
contact and negative temperature coefficient.

b. Distinguish the characteristics of Germanium, Silicon and GaAs referring to

Fig 1.18 of the text book.
Q3.
a. How temperature effects the resistivity of a conductor?
The general rule is resistivity increases with increasing temperature in conductors and decreases with
increasing temperature in insulators. Unfortunately there is no simple mathematical function to
describe these relationships.

the resistance increases as the temperature of a conductor increase, so the resistance is directly
proportional to the temperature. When we increases the temperature the amplitude of vibration of
atoms increases as result of which the number of collision among the electrons and atom increases, and
hence resistances increases

b. Explain the effect of temperature on forward and reverse characteristics of

junction diode.

c. Estimate the value of thermal voltage VT at a temperature of 37oC.
