SUBJECT NAME: FLUID POWER ENGINEERING (2151903)

QUESTION BANK
1. Sketch a hydro-power plant and explain its different elements Classify hydro-
electric power plants according to availability of head, quantity of water and
nature of load.
2. List the factors affecting selection of site for hydro-electric power plant.
3. List out important hydroelectric power plant installation in Gujarat. Also give
advantages and disadvantages applications of hydro power plant.
4. What is jet propulsion? Derive the efficiency of jet propulsion.
5. Find the equation for work done when moving plate is vertical and moving along the jet.
6. Find the equation for work done when moving plate is inclined and moving along the
jet.
7. Show that the force exerted by a jet of water on an inclined fixed plate in the direction
of jet is given by Fx = ρaV2 sin2 θ Where a = Area of the jet, V = Velocity of the jet and θ =
Inclination of the plate with the jet
8. A 80 mm diameter jet having a velocity of 25 m/sec strikes a flat plate, the normal of
which is inclined at 45° to the axis of the jet. Find the normal pressure on the plate (i)
When the plate is stationary (ii) When the plate is moving with a velocity of 12 m/sec in
the direction of jet and away from the jet. Also determine the power and efficiency of the
jet when the plate is moving.
9. Compare inward flow and outward flow reaction turbine
10. What do you mean by an air vessel? Explain the function of an air vessel for reciprocating
pump.
11. Discuss the criteria for selection of pumps.
12. Compare impulse and reaction hydraulic turbines.
13. A jet of water having a velocity of 15 m/sec strikes a curved vane which is moving with
a velocity of 5 m/s in the same direction as that of jet at inlet. The vane is so shaped that
the jet is deflected through 135o. Diameter of the jet is 100 mm. assuming the vane to be
smooth, find (i) force exerted by the jet on the vane in the direction of motion (ii) work
done (iii) efficiency. Assume symmetrical balde.

efficiency for a series of flat vanes held normal to the axis of the jet.
17. What do you understand by hydraulic machines? Discuss impulse momentum equation
as applied to these machines
18. A jet of water 5 cm diameter moving at a velocity 30 m/s impinges on a symmetrical
