Research Task - Ansel Adams

“To photograph truthfully and effectively is to see beneath the surfaces and record the
qualities of nature and humanity which live or are latent in all things.”

I chose to write about Ansel Adams for my research

project because, I immediately liked his art once I googled
him. His photos are unique, and he has stayed true to his
style throughout all his photos. His images are special and
still inspire many outdoor photographers.

Ansel Easton Adams, also known as Ansel Adams, was

born on the 20th February 1902 and died on 22nd April
1984. The photographer was born in San Francisco. The
artist showed early signs of interest and love
photography. As a young child, Ansel often took photos
and assembled them into “photo diaries”.

Ansel Adams artworks, were typically black-and-white

images of beautiful landscapes. Although he did develop
coloured artworks as well. He was influenced by the work of Paul Strand, who also used the
concept of black-and-white photography. However, Strand’s artworks have more of a
vintage mood to them.

All Ansel’s artworks contain a majestic element to it, and great detail. Clouds and fog are
usually seen in his artworks. He often captured
weather within his photos, and it adds to the
brilliance of his photographs.

The artist was greatly inspired by landscapes and

the environment. His artworks depict great depth
and mystery. He has always communicated the
importance of our land and the beauty of it,
through his art. He used his work to promote
protection of the wild. He is an environmentalist,
who believes greatly in nature and preserving it.
To quote the photographer, “It is horrifying that
we have to fight our own government to save the
environment”. He has influenced others to looking
after our environment, as he did.

It is said that the lack of friends and siblings,

influenced his interest in nature. His love for the
piano, and his skill, gave him the ability to be accurate and precise in his photography later
on. His father was unable to carry out his love of science and therefore, supported his son’s
love of art and nature.

His most famous artworks, were captured at Yosemite National Park, which is where he
developed and sold his early artworks. Ansel Adams once stated, “Yosemite Valley, to me, is
always a sunrise, a glitter of green and golden wonder in a vast edifice of stone and space”.
When Ansel visited the park with his family in 1961, he used a camera that his father had
given him, to take photos. He went back a year later, with a better camera and tripod, and
developed a better understanding of photography techniques.
