University of South Carolina Panhellenic Association Raises $20,000 to Support
Women’s Educational Programs in the U.S. and Africa Through their partnership with the Circle of Sisterhood Foundation, Funds Raised will Benefit Two Organizations: Begin Anew of Middle Tennessee and The Street Business School
Belmont, NC – August 7, 2020 – The Circle of Sisterhood Foundation (CofS), an organization founded and powered by sorority women to remove barriers to education for women worldwide, today announced that its campus partner, The University of South Carolina Panhellenic Association, has raised $20,000 to fund fund two grants supporting women’s education, both here in the U.S. and beyond in Africa.
The first grant will benefit Begin Anew of Middle Tennessee, an organization that empowers individuals to overcome the obstacles caused by poverty by providing education, mentoring, and resources. The grant will help break the cycle of poverty for 55 women pursuing a High School Equivalency education in Nashville, Tenn. by funding free courses, childcare, meals, transportation, and additional services.
“The Circle of Sisterhood grant supporting Begin Anew’s Nashville program offers more than dollars - it transforms lives through adult education, reflected in improved jobs, promotions, and opportunities,” said Elaine Gordon, development director, Begin Anew. “Education provides a pathway out of poverty and into a better life for individuals and their families. We stand together to raise up the women who relentlessly pursue their dreams, fight for a better future, and deserve another chance.”
The second grant will support Street Business School, a leader in global training with a mission to end extreme poverty by empowering women as entrepreneurs, and teaching other organizations to implement its proven and effective business training. This will enable the certification of 72 African organizations to implement a six-month community classroom that will provide 660 women the skills needed to become financially independent. In turn, these women will be able to send their 3,300 children to school, helping further improve their lives and economic position.
“Street Business School is grateful to partner with The Circle of Sisterhood to help women confidently lift their families from poverty through access to entrepreneurial skills and economic independence,” said Devin Hibbard, CEO, Street Business School. “We are thrilled to collaborate with this community of sorority women to empower other women to break the cycle of poverty in their families and communities.”
“As sorority women, we have the opportunity to use our platform to break down the barriers of poverty and empower women through expanding the availability of education worldwide,” said Emma Kate Rhymer, vice president of service, University of South Carolina College Panhellenic Association. “We are overjoyed to fund two grants benefitting Begin Anew of Middle Tennessee and the Street Business School, not only supporting women in other countries, but also our local communities to lift up all women.”
