MULTIPLICATION OF DECIMALS MENTALLY
BY 0.1, 0.01 AND 0.001

Objective: Multiply decimals by 0.1, 0.01 and 0.001 mentally

Review

A. Insert the decimal point in the products to make the number sentences
correct.

1) 3.72 x 10 = 372
2) 61.217 x 100 = 6121
3) 18.177 x 100 = 1817
4) 25.64 x 10 = 256
5) 7.214 x 100 = 7214

B. Multiply.

1) 8.93 x 10 = 
2) 4.72 x 10 = 
3) 17.25 x 100 = 
4) 42.7 x 100 = 
5) 86.41 x 10 = 

Study and Learn

Do you know that we can multiply decimals by 0.1, 0.01 and 0.001 in a very, very
easy way? Study the examples below.

0.1 x 21.4 = 2.14

0.01 x 21.4 = 0.214
0.001 x 21.4 = 0.0214

Compare the multiplicands and the products.

In what direction was the decimal point moved? to the left

When 21.4 was multiplied to 0.1, how many decimal places did the decimal point
move? one

When it was multiplied by 0.01? 0.001? two, three

What pattern do you observe?

Since any number multiplied by 1 is equal to the number, just count

the decimal places in 0.1, 0.01 and 0.001 and move the decimal point of the
other factor to the left by the appropriate number of decimal places.

What do we apply to the product if the decimal places are not enough? zero

Below are other examples for you to study.

0.1 x 14.52 = 14.52

= 1.452

0.01 x 314.35 = 314.35

= 3.1435

0.001 x 49.73 = . 4973

= 0.04973

Look at the last example, we used zero (0) as place holder.

2
Try These

Let’s see if you can answer the following:

A. Write the missing number.

1) 12.79 x ___ = 1.279

2) 151.82 x ___ = 15.182
3) 426.34 x .001 = ___
4) 289.01 x .01 = ___
5) 603.45 x ___ = 6.0345

B. Multiply. Complete the table below.

0.1 0.01 0.001

1) 14.35
2) 156.32
3) 412.45
4) 123.73
5) 249.02

Wrap Up

In multiplying decimals by 0.1, 0.01 and 0.001 move the

decimal point of the other factor to the left by the number of decimal
places in 0.1, 0.01 and 0.001 respectively.

3
On Your Own

Try to do the following mentally.

1) 43.35 x 0.1 6) 26.72 x 0.001

2) 62.14 x 0.01 7) 89.99 x 0.01
3) 14.35 x 0.001 8) 143.15 x 0.1
4) 314.78 x 0.1 9) 365.01 x 0.001
5) 543.96 x 0.01 10) 337.14 x 0.01

Check your answer with the answer key.

If you get…

8-10 Excellent! You may now proceed to the next lesson.

5-7 You need to review the processes you missed.

0-4 You need to repeat the whole process. Ask your teacher or elder to
help you.
